JZ Machtech - nr Watford

Post by nberry »

Dear All,

Just bought a '72 911E and this my first post. Looking through the pile of invoices etc. that came with it there was a lot of work done in the past by Machtech. Does anyone have any views on them - it needs a bit of bodywork updating and I was thinking of taking it back to them since they are as close to Cambridge as I can find, unless anyone can recommend someone nearer?

Nigel.

Welcome Nigel - nice choice of motor 8).

Unless they have changed recently, I'm pretty sure JZ focus on the mechanicals (and have a good reputation for this).

I'm sure others more local to you can comment on their experiences with body shops.

Enjoy the car.

Ian's right, JZ don't do bodywork. I had my car serviced with them when I bought it as they're just down the road. They know their stuff and Steve McHale knows MFI on our early cars inside out but they're not cheap. Parts are very expensive.

My 912 is booked in to Mactec on wednesday for an Mot and to be lowered a little they have a really good reputation and as everthing in life you get what you pay for, just hope they dont find to much wrong. to lower the car is around £250 and full geometry set up another £300 with the MOT dont expect much change out of £1000 but it may be more  just keeping my fingers crossed and telling myself it will be worth the wait and telling the wife ..........nothing :|

I hope they do a better job than when my mate took his 944 turbo there for brake work. Perhaps they just get confused by the sight of a water pumper!!!
A place which I have good local reports on is Autostrasse in Coggershall Essex (01376 562922). Also a bit nearer to Cambridge.
Might just know a good local body shop too.
Drop me a PM if you want Nigel, I'm just down the road from you. :)

JZM

JZM market themselves as a porsche specialist - they tend to get the job done but normally at a significant cost....Porsche centre Hatfield used them up until recently to work on Older cars that they did not have the time / space / expertise to work on.....so they obviously do an excellent job  . My expereince has lead me to feel that they offer a Rolls Royce product for Rolls Royce money and no matter whether you can prove it or not most garages replace items that may not necessarily require renewal or replacement. JZM always normally replace parts (genuine) as "we can afford it" ! If you start being specific, fussy or suply ur own parts & especially if ur car is not that special or you don't have loads of cash you'll get a slightly different service!

Sometimes you can provide the Parts yourself (PCGB members normally gets 10% from official Porsche dealer - Hatfield do)

Nigel - I've sent you a PM.

Regards
Mark.

Nigel

When you say the bodywork needs updating - do you mean repairing!

I know an excellent body guy north of sandy which is not a million miles from you. My 914's there at the moment. Let me know of you want contact details.

just got my 912 back from JZ went in for suspension drop plus service, as I have never worked on an aircooled engine before just wanted it checked over by someone that knows what they are about. :? Failed the MOT on warped rear Drums (thought Ihad discs all round :( )didnt get the suspension drop I wanted they said it would be a waste of time as I have to do the brakes. In total they had the car for two weeks, it runs very well now, had a very large bill and got the distinct impresion that they just could not be bothered : :x : . Recomendations for a local specialist would be most welcome. Will be doing the brakes myself.

Try Tony Outridge at Porschons in Kimpton. He is well established with lots of experience with the earlier cars. Never been there as I do my own but I have not heard any bad reports. He is ex Neil Bainbridge/Autofarm I believe. 01438 833911.
