914 rear calipers again !!

They've died again

anyone have some at a reasonaible price that are 'working' - been 'had' once

- I dont wnat to send to be refurbed as the turnaround is TOO long - want to bolt on and drive !!

I am in the process of re-building mine and its not that hard and all the seals are available from mittelmotor which took 2 days to get to me. Just a thought. There is no guarantee that another set will be any good either or this time next year you could be faced with the same problem again.

There's a set on evil bay at the moment but I agree with David, either rebuild or by a rebuilt set. I fannied around for 2 weeks trying to get a 2nd hand pair to work properly. In the end I bought a reconditioned set from Mittelmotor.

David, how easy are they to rebuild, I've got a set of seals but haven't got round to reconditioning mine yet.

I rebuilt the rears (and front's as it goes) on my ol' blue '75.
Is wasn't hard at all & I had no instructions. I figured they weren't gonna get any worse. Just be methodical & use common sense.

Ad,
The re-build is actually alot easier than I thought and with the help of an article from 914club.com it was very easy. The worse part was the fact that one of the adjuster screw i had was damaged which cost quite alot from mittelmotor. I think in total for all the seals and 2 off adjuster screws the parts cost me approx £70 which was enough seals to re-build 4 rear calipers. I did however end up buying a cylinder honing tool to polish the bores but that was a further £10 off the internet. Having now done it I intend doing the same on one of my other 14's as its very easy to do and alot cheaper than buying re-furbished units and also i have learnt how the handbrake works which should help understand why the bloody thing never worked before!!!

I have now fully painted both calipers and they look great.

I have found the best value is to get the specialist Duitch recons..I can get these for about 86 each exchange..

The only problem I have heard with exchange units is that unless your old units are in good re-conditional condition to start with they will not exchange them!!! to me that defeats the point and as the seals cost very little my costs were so high due to the adjuster screws being damaged.

...cool, lots of info...we have tried rebuilding ( the we means my mechanic

) and this time it has not worked that well

...will be buying some from mittelmotor me thinks, as I just need to get it sorted...getting frustrated at drivng a variety of VW golfs and need my FOURTEEN BACK !!

Mine is 71/72 (1700, tailshift), or are they all the same ??

Not sure if there are any differences but my 914 is a 71 and the ones from Mittelmotor fitted fine. Forgot to mention that there is an exchange charge that is refundable when you return your old set. May be worth investing in some new rear pads(ebc green stuff - normally there is a discount for Porsche club members) and new handbrake cables as well.......if you like spending money that is!

If you phone Mittelmotor, most of the staff speak english but they usually like you to fax confirmation of your order to them.

ANOTHER QUESTION ..............

I thought that I would try the rebuild kits before going down the exchange route on the caliper, but I have spent 20 mins on mittelmotor site and can only find the refurb'ed calipers, not the kits ??

Can anyone point me to this ? I have emailed them with this query, but thought I would ask here in case it is blazingly obvious

I will get it back on the road in the next week !! going mad

If you go to the rear suspension section and look at the photo underneath the exploded diagram you'll see lots of bits. If you click on the respective items on the photo you'll get the prices shown in the price panel. (I'm assuming that the photo shows all the seals etc needed)
