Full suspension with raised spindles

Post by sladey »

Ok as some of you will know I recently upgraded to tractiv suspension so my old setup is for sale

So this is

Coil conversion all around from elephant racing including weld-on anti bump steer kit
Adapter for boxster brake conversion
Front struts with raised spindles (raised 19mm so still fit under 15 inch wheels)
Rebuilt bilsteins dampers

Details of all the work I’ve done fitting these are on my resto thread but will take a bit of looking as the threads been going for 20 years

Coilover conversion
As I said it’s the elephant racing kit - you can find it on their site.
For the fronts although it said it would fit Boge struts the ID was marginally too small so I raise it with them and they machined me a new pair of sleeves (I might still have the originals as well)

As part of the conversion I built a 20ton press and raised the spindles by 19mm. This is the maximum you can raise them and still fit under 15inch wheels. Without trying to teach anyone to suck eggs, the whole point of raised spindles is that it allows you to lower the car but still preserve the suspension geometry - so it gives you a 'normal' suspension movement. I understand it's what the racers would do

Still with the front struts I bought the elephant racing “Racing bump steer kit” (look it up on their site). This involves welding a lower arm onto the strut so that you can use spacers to adjust the angle of the steering arms and keep them level (to prevent bump steer). Again on the sucking eggs category this is to preserve the steering behaviour when the car is lowered - if not done then you can experience bump steer.

At the rear it’s bolt-on to convert to coilovers. However it’s recommended that you weld on the strut tower reinforcements which I did. Obviously the reinforcements aren’t included. I don’t know how vital this strengthening is if you aren’t tracking the car.

I’ve included the adapter to fit boxster 2.7 callipers. When I was last refreshing everything I stupidly tapped one of the callipers mounting holes with the wrong size tap. To fix this I drilled and tapped it out to a 14mm thread which will be stronger than the original. I then drilled out the boxster adapter accordingly to take the 14mm bolt.

So what this means is that if you wanted to go with stock 3.2 callipers and not do the boxster conversion then you’d have to drill out one of the mounting holes to 14mm. You should see this in the photos.

If you go for the boxster upgrade though no such work is required as the stock 2.7 boxster callipers will just bolt on. It’s an excellent t conversion and I’d recommend it.

Other points to note - there are “hats” that sit at the end of the springs. It looks like the helper springs have chewed them up in places. This isn’t affecting the strength of them but if you wanted to replace the hats they can be bought from demon tweaks for not a lot.

At the top of the front strut I made my own tower/hat for the top of the shock. These are made from fairly thick steel. I can’t remember why I made them - at that point elephant weren’t selling them I think. Again details will be in my thread somewhere.

If you see silver on bits of the components this is Alumslip - anti-seize that works across different metals. It’s good stuff but hard to get off.

You can see that the springs have scuffed the threaded insert in places. I had previous springs that snapped so can only assume it relates to then. The current springs have only been on there a few years - since then I’ve been doing 3-5000 miles a year. I refurbished all the suspension just a few years ago (again exact dates will be on my thread) so whilst its well used it’s all in pretty good condition

I’ll stick up a load of pics. Happy to answer questions

I’m really not sure on price. Sorely got to be worth a grand? Or make me an offer

I do t really want to be posting this lot but would happily bring it to the ddk get together

Ok picsImage
