AKI-electronic pro-Sparx Professional+ ignition system

Post by matteo68 »

My S was at Greatworth for MOT and oil service last week so thankfully avoided all the horrors at Bicester Motion but Angus reported that the pickup from idle was rather sluggish.

Investigations as to to why this might be revealed that a non-standard CDI box had been fitted at some point in the past, along with a modified distributor with no points. It wasn’t a CDI+ but an AKI electronics proSparx Professional+ system which neither of us had ever heard of before.

Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with this system? It certainly hasn’t been problematic when I’ve been out in it - the car always starts on the button and pulls strongly and cleanly through all the gears but it was a surprise to find this system behind the cover and I’d like to understand it better now. In all other respects the car is as it left the factory in January ’72 but this is definitely non-standard!

pro SparX - HKZ ignition modules
The 1960s saw the birth of the high- voltage capacitor ignition . The high-voltage capacitor
ignition made its debut in the NSU Wankelspider, later finding use in the RO 80 and the Porsche 911, as well as other well-known manufacturers and vehicles.

We have retained this principle, implementing and improving it with modern components. Programmable ignition boxes are also available here to optimize engine performance.

pro SparX HKZ

For road sports vehicles and motorsport

proSparX
plug & play replacement module for 911s built up to 1978
NEW also in 6 Volt version e.g. for PORSCHE 356

The AKI ignition module proSparX is designed to replace a defective or no longer efficient ignition module.

We supply the ignition box in a cast aluminum housing modeled after the original (see illustration).
Those who don't require the original housing appearance, e.g., for racing, can choose the aluminum profile housing version.
Of course, we can also install our modern electronics in your old original housing.

It can replace 3-pin ignition modules used up to approximately 1978
(BOSCH original number, e.g., 0 227 200 001, 0 227 200 002, etc.).

If you no longer have the original 3-pin plug
or are converting your vehicle to HKZ,
you can purchase the plug from us as a spare part.

Apparently programmable but no sign of the software download area on their website so presumably they limit that to authorised dealers only (didn’t see any prices on the website either).

No sign of a “CE” certification mark on the case label?

Thanks. Angus has a number of questions to put to AKI next week about the system in my car and other matters. Will see what they say.

I know the company. These units are a similar price point to ours so I'd expect to see a professional looking PCB inside. The lid has already been removed so why not post a picture of the innards here?
