Electric fuel pump

Looks like my fuel pump has had it. Should I replace with an electric one? Is it worth the hassle?

Rebuilding my pump is unknown territory for me. Fiddly and not too sure what I’m doing.

Electric means getting electric to the pump ( I’m 12 volts already) and sealing off the old one. So still work to do.

Not looking for originality but reliability. Wouldn’t do anything that couldn’t be put back to original.

What do you guys think?

Fitting an electric fuel pump to a 356 is a popular mod, there's lot's of information on the 356 Registry site. Often the pump is sited behind the floorboard in the passenger footwell and I think it just pumps through the existing original pump.

PRS sells a suitable pump.

Having said all that, I rebuilt the pump in my A so it can't be that difficult. I got a rebuild kit from PRS, the pump comes out easily and isn't a complicated mechanism. You've just got to remember to preload the diaphragm when you screw everything back together..

It was the preloading I was worried about. I have a rebuild kit. Just don’t want to get so far and get stuck!

Due to lockdown. Might be the perfect time to give it a go. If all else fails. I can go electric!!

Mike is right I would give the re-build a try first of all. The mechanical pump does a good job overall and there is as Mike has advised a lot of info to look at. The pump needs to work well if the car is left for weeks as the Ethanol in current fuel really does dry out the bowls of the carbs so to fill them, it does have to churn and churn for while. I always start mine once a week regardless now to make it easier. Then again my rebuilt starter and cleaned solinoid points with also I think perfect earths make for really fast engine turnover so different to some years ago when it was so very slow.

Is the fuel pump cap okay and does not leak? The tightening of the 10mm bolt can over many years deform and even crack it or the location thread for the bolt can strip. I re-tapped mine to 1/4" UNF and it has worked well even a 11mm spanner fits the bolt head.

Yes, I will rebuild the pump - Gulp!

I may need some help along the way. one thing I have learnt is to do disassembly of these parts with springs and clips in a plastic bag.

Sops them pinging around the kitchen and loosing a vital part.

Wish me luck, probably start next week or the week after or the week after that or after that orwhenever I have time
