Clutch adjustment

Post by GonzoBard »

I had a new clutch fitted about 300 miles ago. Towards the end of my last run I had difficulty changing into first and reverse, with gears grinding at low revs. Subsequently with engine and box cold I could select first and reverse (all be it I only tried very gingerly). I’m not clear whether it is just a case of clutch adjustment, I haven’t been able to figure it out just from the manual. The clutch pedal moves at least 50mm before starting to engage and there is certainly plenty of movement at the gearbox end, I can pull the cable so the pedal is right back and the barrel adjuster is a good 15mm from the clutch lever. Any suggestions, please? Thanks.

Way too much slack in the cable. Pedal should only move about 10mm before you feel the slack being taken up. Are you sure you have the right cable?

Thanks Keith, I’ll tighten it up. I don’t think the cable has changed, it has been on the car for at least 20 years.
