Rear Screen corner corrosion

Dear All,

I am about to get the corrosion around the bottom rear screen corners on my 1968 911L sorted.

I presume the corrosion which is mainly on the inside (but now breaking through the outer surface) is due to condensation from the hot air that is directed up to the rear screen on these early models.

Both heating nozzles are loose in the bodywork due to the corrosion which seems fairly well contained around the nozzle.

Can anyone give some idea of the work/difficulty involved in cutting out this corrosion and remaking the necessary internal panel? I have got rear screen corner panels to do the outside but have never seen any parts to fix the inner corrosion or is this part of the rear parcel shelf?

Any help or advice would be very welcome.

If localised just around the hole for the heater tubes then it should be possible just to cut out the rotten section and weld in the repair then re cut the hole. If you find there is more rust than fist anticipated the a complete parcel shelf would be the solution - see link. http://www.restoration-design.eu/store/product/PP221

Rather late thank you for reply.

Cutting started last week. Looks like I do need new parcel shelf and the long support strip with the circular holes that gives extra support. will be using Restoration Design for parts. Thanks for suggestion

I'm not sure condensation is your problem. One of the in-built design issues with any early 911 is the pooling of water at the lower corners of your screen. You will have noticed this when you wash your car.
Over the years constant pooling of rain and washing water here eventually finds it way under the window seal and is trapped eating away at the metal. Even on a perfectly dry car if you gently lift the rubber at the corners i bet you will find a little water will dribble out. I discussed this issue with Barry our ddk master metal craftsman many years ago and asked him if it might be possible to incorporate a little drain hole through the metal to the engine compartment during his restorations. He said he though this might work and it's something you could consider while you are in there doing your repair. It would be completely hidden.
