LSD suggestions for 915 gearbox

Interested to hear of your experience and recommendations for a suitable aftermarket/retro fit LSD and uk suppliers. Predominant use will of course be road but I do intend the occasional track day or sprint. Has anyone fitted a Wavetrac?

After talking things through with Mike Bainbridge I opted for a Guard diff which are highly rated by many. Matt Monson at GT is very helpful and a great guy to deal with... http://www.guardtransmissionllc.com/

As yet though I can't comment on how it feels compared to the ZF diff in my E which feel great.

Hi, I also prefer the ZF diff but it is the correct output flanges that can make it more difficult to find. We have fitted Quaife LSD's again with good service and results. I am Going to try a Kaaz next month on box for an RSR project we have in. The only LSD I did not live with and thus removed it was a Gripper diff which was simply to clunky for a road car.

You can work around the output flange issue with the ZF LSD. But if you fit incompatable flanges it will damage your ZF diff.

i had a quaife torsen jobby in one of my cars. It didnt do the "drive it sideways" thing that zf/guard plate diffs seems to do. was it kaput or do they not work like that?

Thanks for the feedback, seems a case of personal choice. I'm after more road bias than track but as my car is a complete resto job I'm also keen to make the right mods.

Would anyone know if these various brands of diffs need expert figment or is it within the realms of a reasonably competent diy'er?

What's the labour costs to normally install an LSD and how long to fit.

Give Mike Bainbridge at MB Engineering a call up in Cumbria, you won't find a better gearbox expert.
Plated doffs need setting up worth the right torque applied pressure on the plate stack.
mike knows what to do.

Other torque sensing doffs are a boltin job but I would shy away from gutting the box unless you have the right tools and information.

mike is very user friendly and straight forward.

Costs will depend if you give him the car or the free gearbox as much as anything else.

To resurrect this thread;

I am having my 915 rebuilt as part of a full car resto on my '82 SC. The car will be slightly up on power and slightly down on weight, but it is still going to be a road car for use on the twisty B-roads of Lincolnshire. I am not a racing driver and have no interest in lap times, etc, but I do like to be able to provoke the car under throttle if I want to. The box currently has a standard open diff.

With this in mind I'm thinking a Quaife torque biasing diff would be ideal. I don't want a car that could catch me out under deceleration or braking or something more prone to understeer, just something that I can, if the moment takes me, push the back end out around a tight corner. What do the experts think?

An LSD actually helps the car with stability under braking.

So I was wondering what do people want from an LSD on a road car?

So far I can see on this thread:

Kick the back end out
Stability under braking (which LSDs do this?)

What else?
