Originally built as a project for Thoroughbred and Classic Cars in 1989 by renowned specialist Bob Watson, this 1973 RSR replica has seen varied competition use over the years at the hands of some well known names including Alec Poole and Henry Pearman. Over the last two years it has been comprehensively mechanically rebuilt by Francis Tuthill Ltd and remains a brilliant track car, but has been calmed down rather to make the car comfortable for road use.

The car is based around a shell from a 1973 911 E.

The engine is a 2.8 and was rebuilt by Francis Tuthill Ltd in March 2010. It is based on the correct cases from a 1973 911 S and is fitted with a 2.8 RSR crank, and genuine twin-plug heads. Modern Jenvey throttle bodies and an Omex ECU take care of the feeding and firing and combine with G60 cams to make the engine very tractable for road use as well as brilliantly powerful. After the rebuild it made an honest 265bhp at 7000rpm on the rollers at Northampton Motorsport.

The gearbox was rebuilt by Tuthill in September 2010 and is fitted with a LSD and Wevo gateshift kit as well as a shorter 5th gear for improved high speed acceleration.

The suspension features Tuthill’s custom shock absorbers, adjustable ARBs and SCRS rear trailing arms. Brakes are 930 Turbo items with an adjustable bias pedal box.

Inside is a full Tuthill race dash with a 10,000rpm rev counter, lightweight carpets and modern race seats. The roll cage is a recent item, again by Tuthill.

Wheels are genuine 8”x15” and 9”x15” Fuchs, correctly refurbished in 2010. A pair of genuine 11"x15" item, also refurbished, are available by negotiation.

The body features the widened RSR arches and bumpers and RS ducktail engine lid. It was previously fitted with Plexiglass windows and a GRP bonnet but has recently gone back to standard glass (bar a plexiglass rear screen) and a steel bonnet. The front screen is heated.

The car drives brilliantly. It’s surprisingly tractable around town, idling calmly and pulling cleanly from low revs, but it absolutely comes alive in the higher rev range, screaming and shrieking from 4500rpm on and piling on speed at a devastating rate. The brakes are solid, progressive and powerful and the suspension controls the body beautifully without being harsh or crashy. The clutch is firm, but not obstructive and the box shifts quickly and accurately.

A small fortune has been spent on making this car look and drive correctly. It would make a brilliant Sunday morning blaster, a supreme trackday car or would be suitable for numerous motorsport events. Unlike many replicas it would also be an excellent starting point for an historic racer, being based around a 73 shell and 73 engine means that with some alterations – most notably to the induction and firing – FIA Group 4 papers would be obtainable and the car would then become a ticket to some very high level historic events. We are happy to carry out this work and supply the car with papers, please call to discuss.

It comes with a history file including copies of the original 1989 build story in Thoroughbred and Classic Cars and many tens-of-thousands-of-pounds of receipts

There can be very few RSR replicas as mechanically fresh as this, add to that its competition history, potential historic racing eligibility and the fact that it is well-known in classic Porsche circles and you have a very special motor car indeed.
