The story of how Peugeot's intellectual property rights forced Porsche's new 901 to be renamed the 911 is well known.
The car was presented to the world as the 901 in September 1964 and by November the model name was no more and the legend of the 911 was born.
1964 911s are therefore enormously rare as they were only built for about 6 weeks. They are visually near identical to the preceeding 901s but are unique in not carrying the '911' engine lid script of the 1965 onward cars.
This particular car is chassis number 300170 and was delivered in December 1964. It is very well known internationally.
The car was a fairy-tale US barn find in 1993, discovered complete and without accident damage by a Dutch enthusiast who painstakingly researched and restored it to the condition you see here.
He has owned the car ever since and it is now offered for sale for the first time in its restored condition.
Very few of the remaining earliest 911s can be as exceptional as this. The intricacy of the restoration truly needs to be seen to be appreciated. It is not a car that has simply been passed to a specialist for a rebuild, but one that has been the 17 year focus of the owner's desire to create the perfect 1964 911.
It is so exceptional that when German precision model-maker CMC decided to build a 1:18 1964 model they chose to base it on this car, as seen in the headline image above.
The car is presently Belgian located and registered.
