I have been offered this, what's it worth?

Post by ianj »

Hi, i've been offered a '73/1974 model year impact bumper 2.7 coupe. It has been off the road for nearly 20 years 1 owner from new and has only covered about 27k. The engine is out and in pieces but all there (there is a story but i won't bore you with it). Its been under cover but the bonnet will need replacing, door is rusty along bottom edge and it does have bubbling in other areas. It is a very original california car and interior should clean up to be excellent. I am finding it a little difficult to value this car being an early impact bumper with engine out and some rust, so i would appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks, Ian

only if it's a carrera motor eg 2.7 MFI 210bhp

A rusty 74 2.7S is not worth a huge amount TBH and you'll struggle to find anyone willing to throw any money at restoring it ........... a rusty '74 2.7 Carrera is a different proposition though

What model is it ?

Its not how fast you go, but how you go fast ;)

I think it is just the 2.7 S. Vin is 911 4100 313, if anyone can tell me a little more about it or point me in the direction of how I can find out.
Thanks

Ian,

It's in fact a base model 911 coupe which had the 150 BHP engine and of which 4014 were produced in coupe form in the '74 model year.

The engine number should be 6140xxx or 6149xxx if it is a sportomatic.

I reckon £3500/4000ish if you believe the box is good and depending on how hard the paint will be to match. Putting the engine back together could run to 3500, then a bit more to recommission and a chunk for the hassle factor and you are at market value.

27k miles or 127k miles - it's still in bits and has been standing for some time, so count on more money to spend when it goes back on the road.

They are not rare or dear in this condition in the USA with no rust. I don't doubt there are sentimental folks out there who might pay more, but they're not sitting in this chair tonight ;)

I agree that 3.5k - £4.0k sounds about right. aside from the engine, there will be quite alot of recommissioning work required with regards to brakes, suspension tyres etc. If it has done only 27k, it would suggest that it may have suffered from the head stud issues that were common on the 2.7 IBs. The Californian cars were prone to overheating so the heads may need to be rebuilt. I would pay a bit more and get the necessary engine upgrades fitted Hyd. Tensioners, Timecerts. Also I believe that JE pistons with 964cams can make the car a bit more interesting.

I don't know what it's worth, but I really, really like a narrow-bodied, impact bumpered car.

In fact, if someone should trip over a RHD coupe, preferably mechanically strong and ideally horribly rotten, perhaps they could give me a heads-up  . In fact, I wouldn't rule out a L2R conversion again thinking about it ...
