But I am very much enjoying using my welding day skills ( Barry's Welding day ) to good use..

I found a nasty scab of rust that turned very quickly into a hole and in a very ODD place too..

so with new skills in place and a new set of hammers ( inculding a bloody amazing shrinking hammer!!! ) I made this in two hrs Jo just thinks it looks great , " Great Honey but what is it " she crys!!

" It's a repair patch " all very excited I reply..

" Oh nice "

I was going to graft it in but as it's not really a very important area I am going to plate it but make it as less visable as possible. Most important thing is that it's secure and holding the car togeather..


Any one know why this area would rust!!!

I also had to replace the smuggler box floor area a real pig to do but will post pictures..





Photo does not really show the shape I had to form but it sits perfecty where it should and touches all round I am very pleased in a simple way..

1 hr in I thought this is not going to work but then it started to take shape...

All I used was

wood to hit into..
set of hammers the one I usd the most was the basic ball paine hammer out my van!!
Plyers
and a chisel to get nice sharp edges..
shrinking hammer
some smaller hammers..

this is the 65 car and not the 69 car..

Do we have to guess where the repair is? what part of the chassis is this?

Now the paint has hardened and has been flatted back you'd be hard pushed to notice it.

Nice job.. SWB people will know where the area is.. it's in the trunk area.

I will have to dig out the smugglers area photo's that was a job I thought I dear god but worked out in the end..

Much better to put in metal rather than a bodge.. I know I am plating this area in the trunk but at least it's the right shape.. rather than a nasty under the arches bodge up..

found the smugglers box pic's I had to cut out even more after this picture.. I had to get a section from another car and that was rusty as well so I had to cut out large sections and make those in the same way as Barry showed us and then graft it in and then do it again three sections had to be made for this area.. but it was a nice feeling when it was offered up as it looked like the car would breath again.. I know it's not as good as Barry but I am well chuffed..and it's solid and not botched could have done with making the underseal look the same might have to look at that but I am happy ...
I even remade the tube bit you see in the picture and added it in even though you can't see it but I just wanted to make sure it was all done right..

Nice bit of fabricating and welding work there!

I am guessing that the first picture is at the bottom of steering support bar ( don't know the correct term )? My '67 is looking abit suspect in the same area, going to have to take a look at it soon...

Nice work.

I'd go the extra mile and butt weld it in.

I know its not visible, but its much more likely to rust if flange welded..

Well done Mark, and Nige as well . Mark, I ain't no master: I think the courses proved that most people can do what I do .

David, the Sheetmetal courses covered the merits of butt welds, and the hazards of stepped flange joints.

In fact, most of the students did butt joins in 18 or 20 swg with the MIG, and many did some very nice butts with the TIG as well.

Since this thread has been started, I might as well mention that I'm considering doing another pair of Basic Welding and Sheetmetal weekends next year, probably in March and October.

I'll flag up a thread in the winter to gauge interest (if any).
