Hi Mark - another project? and another 914! I came to see the last one you were selling orange with the empi wheels (I have an orange bug cabrio you may remember) - nice looking targa - shame I haven't got any more space or I would snap it up. Neil

Quick update -

Engine ut this wekend , after fitting hyd. tensioners ,test driving , and finding a nice sounding engine - good result!!

However , after doing a leakdown test , with some worrying results , then pulling a valve cover and finding 2 broken studs on one cylinder - it looks like I'm finally going to get some use out of my " How to Rebuilt Porsche 911 Engine" book at last !!

Watch this space!!

P.s. - Neil - haven't you bought a proper car yet!!

Thanks for the pic with the dress - don't think I'll be re-instating that!!

Haven't posted for a while - but haven't been idle either - really starting to come together now,

Engine stripped to bottom end

All lower Dilivar studs removed

New steel studs , re-ringed pistons , valves lapped.

Nearly there!!

Re located battery from passenger seat , and mounted MSD

Found a bit of rot at the rear corners - not bad for a 914 though!!
Welded in harness eyes while I was there.

Thats all for now folks - hopefully my missing clutch and flywheel will be found , and I can get the engine and box back in - here's hoping !

Nice progress :) -No handbrake, is this destined be a track only car. You probably have already looked but the cavity in-between the engine bay and the lower firewall usually goes very thin on the floor section. I had less of the lower inner firewall gone and had to replace most of the passenger side floor, in a long strip below the cavity.
I think the rain gets in through a bad rear window seal, runs down behind the packpad and over the years rots that area from in inside out.
Hope yours is good.
James.

Thanks James

Haven't had a really good poke around underneath as yet - though I have plated the area you are talking about - only the outer ends - inboard of this seems to be sound steel - certainly took a weld OK.

I have just fitted a hydraulic handbrake between the seats - I'll post a pic later.

How much progress have you made on your conversion? What engine are you fitting? Are there any pictures on the Forum? (if not , why not)

If it took a weld ok then thats always a good sign. Not done too much with the conversion recently, I had a back op 6weeks ago so I'm being a bit of a pansy :)

I've been tackling some of the less strenuous tasks like making the engine wiring looms and putting the 6 rev counter, 911 oil temp/press multi gauge, separate fuel gauge and petrol reserve light.
I've quite enjoyed this even though I haven't been able to match the factory wire colour codes precisely, the wires are still the correct colour for the function. Then properly soldering the spade connectors then heat shrinking all the ends....the wiring is a work of art. Then it'll all be hidden behind the dash and wrapped in fabric tape in the engine bay. It's all in the details :)
Got my 6 tinware through from the US the other day so I'll sort out the powder coating on that in the next few days
James.

It's another year and you have had a lot of time off..... is the engine in yet???

Remember if it's not on the road by the end of Jan it's mine

OK - missed that deadline - haha , however I have actually been making some progress , whilst neglecting to update this thread.
Breifly , over the last few months , I have fitted the engine , with new flywheel and clutch from Patrick Motorsports in the U.S. (incidentally a very helpful and knowledgable company - don't you just love the Americans - I do! :P )
Then had a lot of niggly problems getting the engine to run at all , but finally today , I have cracked it.
The problem with having everthing as an unknown quantity , is that fault finding is something of a challenge , having no reference point to start from. Also , having rebuilt the engine myself ,there was always a naggiing doubt that I had done something wrong.
Anyway to cut a long story short , having tried 3 sets of leads , 2 coils - new fuel pump , reset float levels , this morning I was about to rip out the entire MSD system , and mechanical advance dizzy , and take a standard SC system off another car - as it was now refusing to even fire at all , I realised the only thing I had'nt tried changing was the plugs. Out came the Bosches , in went a new set of NGK' s and bingo! started first time , settled down to steady idle , and after 2 mins was running superbly.
Despite the freezing temperatures I took it for a blast , and I'm still grinning - pulls like a train!! :P :P :P
Anyway - heres a few pics -

Nice work, Mark.

Something to note for anyone else doing this is that its possible to use the original flywheel, with a 2.2L clutch and a 2.2L gearbox casing.

This is how the factory built the later racers..eg Targa cars etc..

The clutch cable is just a straight run, no silly pulley..

Kind regards
David
