Type4 bearings availability

Post by Bruce M »

Been looking for main bearings for a type 4 (all versions use the same) but they seem to be very hard to find. Except for odd ball over/under sizes.

Was looking for “std” size (although i’ve not measured my cases / cranks yet!). Only option seems to be ordering from Porsche but that does cost more (about £240 I think).

Anyone seen a good source?

I was able to pick up 1.7/1.8 rod bearings for circa £20 although 2.0 rod bearings did seem to be also unobtainable.

However i seem to have sourced a set of KS 2.0 rod bearings now (arriving next week so will see!)

If you have not already give Stateside a call, though likely to be Silverline, which I think are made in Brazil.

This site has some German made ones listed, however no price showing, so could be out of stock: https://www.german-performance-parts.be ... 96&lang=EN

Otherwise, there is a very active Type 4 facebook page - 4th Dimension Type 4 Porsche/VW Performance Group. A search on there might bring up another European seller with stock.

If no luck do Porsche Club members get a discount on parts? We have a 912E which is on 270,000 miles. No history, but if the engine was rebuilt it would have been when quality bearings were easier to come by. £240 makes you wince, and whilst we have Silverline in another engine which is fine, they do not have the same peace of mind.

As above, try Jim at Stateside thats where I got mine from. Although I think the genuine ones may be NLA now. I'm sure a phone call to Jim will be worthwhile either way

Cheers both good input.

Looks like i’ll end up with some spare rod bearings now (proper KS bearings). The STD size for 2.0 crank journal (smaller than the 1.7/1.8 crank journal) which again are out of stock at the usual supplies but are available from Porsche at circa £95.
Will see when they arrive next week. If anyone wants a set let me know. Otherwise the spares will probably be put on eBay.
