Alternative to Factory (Klein) spark plug tool ...

Post by Lightweight_911 »

.

I went to fit a new set of plugs to my car recently &, despite turning the garage upside down, I couldn't find my trusty Klein plug tool anywhere so searched online for a suitable alternative.

Several recommendations on Pelican, Early S registry, 356 Registry, etc pointed to a magnetic 3/8in drive tool from 'Gearwrench' & a quick check revealed that the cheapest source was Amazon in the US.

Total price including shipping, handling & VAT was £35-31 (at current exchange rates) & it arrived in ~ 10 days.

I have to say that the quality is excellent & it does the job perfectly - as good as (or dare I say better) than the Factory tool.

* Note that the part no. typically quoted on the US Porsche forums - 80456 - is wrong - that's for smaller plugs with the 5/8in/16mm hex.

The part needed for std size plugs (13/16in/21mm hex) is that shown in the above pictures - 3930D

Costco used to do Gearwrench stuff occasionally. I've absolutely attacked stuff with their ratchet spanners and they're all hanging on in there.

That is because there was only two in stock at the time, when I ordered, with the caption, further stock will be arriving in the coming months. Obviously they have now sold out, and awaiting new stock

It is confirmed as arriving this SUNDAY...............2025, so 5 days.
