1972t/e wheels

Post by 1972_911t »

What wheels originally came on a 1972 911t/e? And what wheel and tire combinations are people running. The reason I ask is because currently im running 205 tires which seem to bulge out from my rims and they look a bit daft, Aslo im wanting to go a little wider on the back for some extra traction therfore this would make the situation worse. Im trying to consider what wheels to upgrade to to hopefully get 215 or 225's on the back that look good Ie not bulging from the rim.

Varies..

Most I guess 14 by 5 1/2 Fuchs.

But YMMV..

You can get 7's in on the back, with 225's..on most LWB cars I think..

Kind regards

WEll, there were various options.

For the T, it wass standard equipped with 5.5J x 15 non chromed wheels here in europe, all with 165/70 tyres. The E used 6j x 15 inch with 185/70 tyres whilst the S used 6jx 15 fuchs with 185/70 tyres.
For 1973, the ATS Cookie cutters were introduced, as they were lighter than the standard steel but considerable cheaper to produce.

Please note that only with the RS and subsequent carrera's/ SC onwards that different sizes for the front and the back were used.

It is difficult to find these 70 series tyres these days, so people have been replacing the 185/70 with 195/65 or even 205/55 but that is pushing it on a 6j.

Maybe someone can elaborate?

A US spec '72 2.4T would have almost certainly had the optional 6 x 15" ATS Cookie Cutters or Flat 6" Fuchs. With your (very) oversize motor you need as much tyre as possible and should really go fo Carrera/SC flares at the back with 8" rims and 225 or 245 section tyres. If you insist with staying narrow bodied fit 7R rims with 225/50 tyres. Even 205 tyres on a narrow body will rub the arch.

The carrera/sc flares is on the to do list, what are 15/7 or 15/8 wheels like to come across I would profer not to got to 16. Am I looking at mega bucks to upgrade 2 of my wheels to 15x8?

7J and 8J x 15 were the standard early 3.0 Turbo fuchs wheels with 185/70 front and 215/60 rear.

These wheels are also reasonably common on carrera 3.0, carrera 2.7 and SC's.

You are basically looking for a 7J x 15 to run as a rear set up but please remember that the carrera 2.7 RS was the first to have those and you can't have those without the carrera hips.

Having said that, if you slightly roll the lip of your rear arch, it will be sufficient to accomodate a 7j wheel.

It sounds in summary that you can buy a set of early turbo fuchs wheels and flog the 8jx 15 on here?

The part numbers can be difficult to see if the back of the spokes are very dirty, but the size should be easier to see. Post a couple of pics and we will identify them.

Right I have now found the part number of my wheels its 901-361-012-04 which apears from my search so far to be from the earlier 68 69 car 5.5 x 15's standard equipment on the S of these years?. Are these common wheels are are they quite rare? whats there relative value to 6 x 15's?

Thanks Steve

Hi Steve,

The 5.5J x 15 were standard on the S from August 1967 (model year 1968).

For model year 1969 both the E and the S had 6J x 15

The really rare things are the 4,5Jx 15 fuchs wheels as found on the 1966 S. Mark (912 UK) hides his set under his bed

The typical addresses usually have a selection of 6 x 15 or 6 x 14 available (I had a 911 2.7 some moons ago with 14 inch fuchs wheels  ) Ah those were the days etc

Take care,

From the part number those are 5.5 x 15, quite rare as they were only fitted to 68 cars. Want to p/x against 7 and 8 x 15s?
