Was always taught on VW’s as long as you can twist the belt mid way by half a turn or slightly more, it was tight enough.

A week or so ago I had my dynamo belt snap about 100 yards from my house!! The red light came on and so lucky really I was not miles away.

Honestly I checked that belt regularly for tension and thought I had never changed it since 1969 !!
So, went to my tool kit and took out the new belt given to me by my brother when he had his 1951 car. Ever since then I must say it looked chunky against my one. So the spare had been in my toolroll for well over 40 years.

Duly tried to fit this one given to me so long ago. My original one was marked Porsche and made my Pheonix in Germany and the size 9.5mm x 825mm shown. I could not fit the spare one! No specific markings tried but no joy. (Established the pre-A cars have different size belt to the 356A,B,and C,)

Found in my service records I had changed the belt in 1973!! Also found the receipt for it from AFN it cost £0.92 pence in old money! Bought a new one actually two with one as a spare! They are now £8-60 plus VAT. Marked Porsche with the size and part number.

As a guide the system has 9 spacers, to get the factory tension of 20mm free play I have now 7 spacers between the pulley halves and 2 on the outside pulley under the nut.

This belt is so important and I had been running around since 1973 with really no spare and for sure the car could have been stuck anywhere until a correct one was found. Best to check you have a spare one just in case. Roger Bray has them in stock fast service too!!

Franny made a good job on that video first of all saw the belt with the ribs and thought wring one! but she had the correct one ready to fit. Useful to see that and yes too tight the generator or dynamo as I call it could well suffer bearing trouble!

Same belt since 73! But more importantly where did you get a belt for £10? Yes the rimmed ones are less and I understand the rims make them run cooler but they are a bit too wide.

Anyone know of a source of correct width rimmed belts?
