oil change with remote filter

Post by BD55 »

I have recently changed the oil in my newly rebuilt engine which is fitted with a remote oil filter in the nearside rear wheel arch. All went to plan but had a concern about whether to partially fill the new filter with oil to avoid air locks in the system. In the end i didn't do this, just filled the oil, turned the engine over without starting it and then topped up as required. Everything seems ok. Just wondering if anyone has a preferred way of changing the oil and remote filter?

Morning Simon, I have a remote filter on my car and do what you do. I don't prefill the filter with oil, though that seems like a good idea. I'm unaware of any airlock problems with the oil system in a 356.

As for measuring the oil level with a full flow system fitted, I asked the question on the 356 Registry a couple of years ago.

Thanks Mike, that's exactly what i was looking for..... So i'm thinking that the level should be between the middle and top of stick when running and warmed up. And at the top or slightly above when drained back and or cold?

Cliff's advice about checking the oil level in a 356 whilst the engine is running received a mixed reaction in a later thread. Here it is if you care to pick your way through it. :)
