Re: Flares....
....Graham, I'm not sure if I'll ever fit coilovers and the main intention is to build the car as close to original RS specification as possible. Also it's a sensible modification at this point in the build as it gives the option and my understanding is that coilovers always rub without this mod.911hillclimber wrote:....Is it worth getting details of the coil overs you intend to use and check what is needed, or are you, as I suspect, adamant about the authenticity?.....
And thanks Andy, I'll have to find a copy of that magazine

Shouldn't do. I fitted coilovers on my Turbo Hotrod without changing the turret (just the strengthening gussets) had no problem with rubbing.Darren65 wrote:my understanding is that coilovers always rub without this mod.

Re: Flares....
I’ve had coilovers on mine for a few years with no problems. One of the easiest things I’ve done. Don’t really understand the different shock towers though
The simple things you see are all complicated

Re: Flares....
Well I'm only going by what I've read and you guys would know better than me as I've never fitted them.......ultimately academic in my respect as I've no plans to fit coilovers but it's a modification Porsche did in the day so that's what I'm doing

Makes sense to do it as it will add to the satisfaction!
Maybe back in the day the coil springs were larger diameter to those of today, hence the need for more room.

Re: Flares....
Had a great response on the E911SR which confirmed the shock towers were indeed an homologation change for all RS/RSR production starting with #911 460 9001.....
"verstaerkte stossdaempferdome mit grosserem durchmesser D von 85mm auf 100mm vergrossert." - foto 8
"reinforced shocktowerdomes with increased diameter D from 85mm to 100mm enlarged" - photo 8

....so when salivating over that glorious 3.0RS a quick look up underneath the wide rear flares and you'll be able to note if it's a genuine car.....
...or a correctly built rep!
Cheers,

....and so on to the detailed modifications that will transform this shell into an RS.....first of which being the modification to allow the fitment of a front central oil cooler....
....Barry wasn't quite happy with the dimensions and shape of the panel I had sourced so he made his own....

...this time adding a curve for a better fit....

Re: Flares....
Anyone who's gone through a major restoration will tell you they're a love/hate journey that take a lot of time consuming research.......whilst this can often be tedious I have to admit I do enjoy the learning curve and detailed knowledge that comes with it....
....when I was passed the homologation paper above the one thing I was unsure of was item 3. 'Verstarkung Stabilisatorlager, links rechts' which translates as 'Strengthening Stabilizer Bearing, left right' .......the problem being I had never noticed this strengthening and the cars are normally jacked from this point on a lift hence hiding any detail.....the photos that accompany the document aren't particularly clear either....

....however when trawling through my own stash of photos looking for something entirely different I stumbled across photos I had taken a few years ago of the underside of a 2.8RSR and noticed this......

.....a few more hours spent looking through Armando Serrano's excellent Pbase resource (respect

.....just the detail and confirmation of the homologation item I was looking for and another modification for Barry to tick off his list......Happy Days
Cheers,
Darren

Re: Flares....
That’s probably a good mod for all of our cars to avoid jacking damage to the underside of the torsion bar area.
Nice detail, and you are keeping Barry busy enough to give me some more time to get myself ready!

Re: Flares....
....thanks for the pointer Andy, a really useful reference for anyone researching the details of any RS/RSRLightweight_911 wrote:.
I think it was 'general practice' for many race teams - including Porsche - to incorporate race modifications into production models (eg 2.7 RS & 3.0 RS) as & when they developed them rather than waiting for official homologation to be granted by the FIA.
There was an article in the Feb '89 edition of "Excellence" which described the restoration of one particular RSR (chassis no.9114609073).
In the text it discusses numerous modifications that the Factory homologated under ‘special provision #3053’ on August 1st 1975 - including the reinforcements to the RSR chassis in several critical areas.
However, despite the fact that these improvements were not homologated with the FIA until 1975, the modifications outlined were part of every RSR sold by Porsche during the 1974 model year…
The inference was that although some of these reinforcements could have been added later, it is more likely that Porsche began incorporating RSR modifications as soon as they developed them - in a similar way that Porsche introduced the shorter 'RSR' rear trailing arms to the later production 2.7 RS models (from chassis no 1409) ...

One of the highlights of working with Barry is his regular photo updates and whilst I appreciate that over the years for some on here these images may have become a little 'samey' I'll never tire of his magnificent skills
