CDI box kaput, what other options are there?

Post by majordad »

CDI box was subjected to reverse polarity on reinstalling and appears kaput. I’m wondering what other options I have or is it worth repairing. Rough costs appreciated

I’ve used the term CDI box but it is in fact a Lummenition box. Car is a 1973 MFI.

My dad put an MSD unit in a while back before giving the car to me and said it was one of the best changes he ever made. I believe its the "6-AL" unit which will give you multiple spark discharge at low rpm's and features a custom rev limiter although I've actually dialled mine down from stock 6500 to 6000.

Thanks all for advice. I’ve gone for the MSD system including solid state coil. Mainly as I’m in the states and can bring it back for $430. I’ll let you know how it works.

Correction $389 and free postage in USA.

I got my MSD before I knew about the lovely repro CDI units but I have to say it works a treat. Cured some very tricky hot starting issues and the car is so much more tractable when warning up.
Best wishes,

Sam.

Fitting it this week, I ordered the Tacho adapter as well, pricey item at $80 but cheaper to buy it in states than import it and postage. And as a first time Pelican order I got 10% off everything

$389 for the lot.

I have a cleverly hidden Canems ECU for my twin plug, car looks 100% stock but has all the features of a modern ECU. Had a couple of teething issues initially but easily sorted and has been excellent and reliable the past few years......all for a couple of hundred quid :)

Freshly rebuilt engine will be mapped on the rolling road next week for a pre-Alps tune-up.......can't wait!

Hi guys,

I presume the Johnny Hart CDI replacement is strictly a replacement for the old unit?

Yes, plug & play replacement

But through software you can also amend (or replace) your ignition curve, add hard & soft rev limits, drive shift lights, etc.

Thanks, I've also added a Pertronix points replacement unit and I don't think it will effect the CDI unit?

In theory no but in practice those units are very cheaply made and often the magnets are not set into the plastic collar evenly resulting in per cylinder timing variations.
