Exhaust to head gaskets

Looking at Pelican and all the usual suppliers of these, I can see the gaskets for around $US12 for a set of 4 or $5.00 for a set of 2. However the freight is $34.00!!! on Pelican (4) and $25 on Sierra Madre for a $5.00 buy of 2 gaskets. A few small gaskets that could be placed in an envelope. Are there better and cheaper suppliers than the usual US ones ( Pelican, Sierra Madre and Stoddart) that make hand their shipping over to third party gougers? There is certainly a market there there for some enterprising sellers.

You might try www.rogerbrayrestoration.com they sell Exhaust flange gaskets 616.111.291.00 and I have used them myself. They ship world wide. You could mail them and ask for a delivery quote. You would think for a few gaskets weighing little, the price would be sensible.

Of course Karmann Connection or PRS services might also stock these items for worldwide sale.

Of course if you order a single small item companies probably add in the cost for order processing which takes them time to do. ( Don't know how that works though in principle )

Just bgt some from PRS. They built a lot of engines so if they are ok for Paul and co then ...

To save £10-20 do you want to be taking it all apart in 12 months to replace the gaskets

I called the shop, and spoke to Any, and paid £24.30 for 8 gaskets. They are £2 each excluding vat

Unfortunately when I looked under the car to find out which gasket was leaking I discovered a hole in the exhaust

He won’t pay VAT if they’re going to Oz and if they’re posted it may we’ll be less expensive than Stoddard’s quote. I imagine they use a premium carrier because post isn’t reliable and there’s no proof of delivery or recall if the consignment goes missing.

In my business an amazing amount of small packets were lost by post.

Thanks everyone. I guess this is a vexing issue for most of us. The problem is that large companies like Pelican et al., hand over packaging and shipping to third party companies. They use "standard" box sizes which means a couple of exhaust manifold gaskets or a decal/sticker get a postage box that could hold 200 of the same item. The shipping costs are increased significantly. You 'can' with a bit of cajoling get them to try harder but you need to do this every time. The items could easily be placed between two pieces of cardboard and sent in an envelope. Australia Post offer secure, tracked delivery as do other suppliers here.

Mike - on PRS I trialled 4 of the exhaust flange gaskets @ 2 quid each and the total with internat. shipping 19 quid for 4. Best so far!

As a last resort here I call the local Porsche Centre and they had sets of 4 for around $20. You never know ...

Shame that we have to go through this hunting for decent value every time, especially down here in the far south. I will keep PRS in mind in future Mike. Looks good stuff.
