Hand throttle Installation - Dashboard location?

My BT6 missed out by a few hundred production numbers on this useful item. I am interested in installing one. I have the mechanism for below the pedal board on the way and a correct knob but the 660mm cable itself is the sticking point. At least for me. This is essentially a tubed, push-pull, twist-lock cable. The prices (not including freight to Australia) are between AU$800-$450 and raises the 'value for money' question for me. I can see the wire (less cable sleeve and twist mechanism) itself for around $40.

Any suggestions are welcomed, as is any source for a decent used cable mechanism.

Below a pic of my hand throttle taken over 10 years ago and it does look cleaner these days! Anyway although your car is a newer model the arrangement might be the same as this RHD factory unit that I have never altered.

I am in the process of installing a hand throttle on my BT6 as it was one of the last ones and missed this useful feature. I acquired a nice throttle level mechanism that is working perfectly and I purchased the 660mm cable from Sierra Madre, as specified for the BT6 cars.

In the process of trial fitting the cable I can see that the wire cable itself is long enough (1.3m) but the reinforced Bowden tube is (as specified) is 660mm (first image). This seems not long enough to be able to position and clamp the tube for effective operation of the cable on the lever arm of the mechanism (images as on a LHD car which seems to have split cable unlike the continuous Sierra Madre part - first image ). NOTE: my car is a RHD but I can't see how that would matter much. At best I could only clamp the end of reinforced section of the cable to the underside of the panel under the gas tank. Not vertically near the actual mechanism (first image)

I am wondering what to do? I could add another section of Bowden tube to the existing section (I have some from a lawn mower), or cut the existing wire and place a small 'elbow' section on the vertical panel nearer to the lever mechanism?

Merv, have you considered that a LHD T6 is different to a RHD T6 in terms of fuel tank and bulkhead?
Apart from a few late “C” cars, the RHD T6 is more T5 in this area?
Does SM show a longer cable for the T5???
Edited to add that From memory mine has the seperate elbow on the end and the inner cable has a joint, just the same as the second picture!
Have you thought about using a piece of kunifer pipe to make the elbow? You could bend it and flare it on the ends?
If you need I’ll send you a photo of the joint area, I do remember thinking it looked a little “Heath Robinson”, but after looking at your picture, that’s how it is!

Thanks Simon. The SM part is supposedly for B/C but you may be right and they only think of the US models. Their T5 does show an 'extra long inner cable" (850mm).

The inner cable on the one I have is fine (1.3m), just the outer Bowden tubing was too short. I have some extra Bowden tube and managed to make up an extension. It now all appears to fit and I will connect the wire to the lever tomorrow. Bugger of a job under that dash in the footwell!

I contacted Sierra Madre about their online catalog and the seemingly incorrect information there. Just pointing out that some caution was needed in suggesting that ALL T6 B/C cars could use the 660mm cable, as they present currently. I added that the RHD cars in the BT6 would need a longer Bowden tube and how I had been affected by this error in their current listing, and they should consider revising the listing.

The cable from the RHS of the dash on the RHD car still needs to reach the lever mechanism on the LHS of the tunnel thus a longer route.

SM wrote back and initially said 'OK, thanks' ... and I thought that they just lost a customer. However, Ian from Sales has been back and seeing what he can do to help.

It is now fitted and works well after a lot of work on that cable!
