Difference between 356 SC engine and same year 912 engine?
Hello. Can anyone tell me if there's a big difference between a 356 SC 1600 engine and a similar year (1964) 912 engine? I ask because I can buy a really nicely restored 356SC, but I'm told it has a 912 engine.
Is this a big deal? I appreciate it will affect the value somewhat (how much I'm not sure) - but if the engine is broadly the same - then I won't worry too much. But if it is a big deal - and the car is worth considerably less because of the engine swap - then I might well pass on the opportunity to buy the car.
Any responses really appreciated. It will help me with a big purchase decision. Many thanks
Gary

They’re almost identical, so the only real disadvantage is that the car no longer has its original engine. So called matching engine numbers cars tend to fetch the highest prices. If this doesn’t worry you......

Buy to flip. The SC is lovely. Very nice restoration. It’ll make someone happy I’m sure. More 356s in the UK is not a bad thing eh?

Think you are right James. A few look sticky.
I think it comes down to condition and price. The two I’m bringing over are, I think, very nicely done full restorations on nice colours. I’ll price them keenly. Then it’s down to finding the right buyer.
I like Trade Classic Auctions as a good route to market. Might try that first.

Re: Difference between 356 SC engine and same year 912 engin
The other significant difference between the engines is in the 3rd crank case piece (at the back with the engine number on it. The 912 as larger collared bolts holding it on (which are set into bigger machined holes, Also the 912 had an electronic tacho where as the SC mostly had the cable operated mechanical one with the drive and gears also built into the 3rd crank case section. The 'normal' trick is to use the 3rd piece from the original engine and bolt it onto the front of the 912 engine (after changing the studs) that way it looks like it's the original engine as it has the enging number from the original engine but any close inspection would show that the 3 digit number porsche stamped onto all 3 case pieces would be inconsistent.

Re: Difference between 356 SC engine and same year 912 engin
My last A sold without even trying at 75k, it ticked the right boxes for a buyer not too fussy about matching numbers, a ‘big name’ restoration & provenance. However it was a desireable colour combo with the right bits done.hot66 wrote:Not sure the ones here are actually selling
The ones that don’t sell are the 100k plus cars advertised on eBay.

So I did, in the end, buy both the 1959 B and the 1964 SC. Correct colours and fully restored. Should be in the UK and prepared for sale in 8 weeks from now. Will keep you posted

Re: Difference between 356 SC engine and same year 912 engin
The 912 is a turned down version of the SC. I believe that they compression was lower for the 912. That said it's very unlikely that all the bits are original so probably more important is what you have on the inside? You might not be getting what is says on the box.gturner008 wrote:Hello.
