UK MOT and 356's
I was wondering how this planned new legislation will impact 356s?
The apparent good news is that many cars over 40 years old won’t have to take an annual road safety test and sustain an MOT. They are described as being 'vehicles of historical interest' rather than the more commonly used term 'classic car'. The bad news is that the cars may not have "sustained any change in technical characteristics of its main components such as engine, brakes, steering or suspension". This development opens up greater motivation for retention of original components. I am not sure, but I recall that this reflected similar legislation in the EU?

Thanks James - in the full DDK 'site under General Chat, there seems to be one thread with 8 replies? I guess more will be spelled out in May this year regarding the details of what constitutes modifications?

Thanks anyway. It was only an interest I had in what might portend here in the future or effect sales of cars between countries.

Re: UK MOT and 356's
All the facts you need to read are on the Gov web site, DVLA will get you there.
In May '18 you will be asked when applying for tax if the car is registered as Historic interest, and if so, is the car is modified. This is the same On-Line or at a Post Office.
If not modified, you say No.
This means you do not have to have an MoT ever again as long as the car is stock. You will be asked every time you apply for tax.
If the car is modified (definitions are on the DVLA web site) and you feel the correct answer to the 'Modified?' question is Yes, you say so.
This then means the car has to be MoT'd every 12 months unless SORN or the car is returned to stock.
You can still have your car MoT'd, modified or not.
This will be treated exactly as it always has been, logged on the system as Pass or Fail. Police, Insurers etc can see these details.(inc members of the public)
If it fails you cannot ignore the failure, you have to get it Passed just as you would today.
I have been right in the middle of all this issue referred to above, and it is my understanding of the situation.
I have a 'Modified' 911, 1973, and will declare the status as modified and continue accordingly with the car's MoT's.
The very long and hotly argued thread in Member's section, the last 2 pages give the conclusions, but the detail is on the DVLA web site.
Hope this helps, taken years off my life!

Thanks for that. I will check and see what modified means in this case. It could increase the value of unmodified cars perhaps.

Re: UK MOT and 356's
modifications have to be substantial ones to loose the MOT free status

^^^ That is the guideline to read.
It is the only sheet of fact on the subject from the Government.

Re: UK MOT and 356's
No MOTs needed? Maybe but yiu must be crazy if you think your insurance company won't challenge you if you make a claim related to any incident be it a road accident or say fire while stored. The first thing they will ask you is... " can you demonstrate that the car was in a roadworthy and generally safe condition Sir"...... Most 356ers do their own maintenance ( or should do) so no independent views are available. An MOT at least me and that an independent official vehicle tester has signed to say yiur car is roadworthy. For this reason all my cars are MOTd and on occasion the test had picked up on a point or two. I only see advantages in having MOTs and disadvantages if you don't.

I'm totally with you Phil, I wouldn't dream of not MOTing my cars, whether it is a requirement or not.Super90speedshop wrote:No MOTs needed? Re: UK MOT and 356's
Just had my 'last' official MOT on the 240Z (it failed! But the seized rear brake was sorted by the guy straight away - lack of use being the problem)
Talking with my local (Polish) MOT guy he seemed affable to doing an MOT check without issuing the paperwork in the future, thus ensuring I have the independent check without the possibility of the car being off the road. Obviously anything he notes that would give rise to an MOT fail would be attended to by him, thus ensuring I have an audit trail.
See any problems with this?

Re: UK MOT and 356's
In Australia some states have regular checkups, other have none. Mine has none and the insurance companies are happy with that. Except when sold the car must have a "Safety Certificate" which is pretty basic anyway. We don't have the salt/rust issues, however, as much as in some other places.
