My new "Sports Purpose"
Hi all
As background I've recently sold my absolutely original, very lovely 2.2E....In short as the value/rarity played with my mind, I felt more a museum manager than an enthusiast - I guess I had an epiphany and the line between pure collector and enthusiast became clearer to me .
What I really wanted was a fast road car (with more grunt) that specifically wasn't original, but which looked very neat and which I could personalize without feeling guilty or indeed destroying inherent value (monetary, historical and/or other). This was the theory but couldn't be tested irrefutably without actually taking the step of selling the E and stepping into the "void". Needless to say there was much thought and finally, after one aborted sale (unexpected family/kids sentimental reasons, to my surprise) I rationalized everything and made the plunge when I found what I thought was an appropriate replacement.....
After a long negotiation I bought a well sorted 1972 911T which had been completely rebuilt and turned into an RS lightweight by John Abbot (SA Porsche specialist) about 17 years ago, and then later had a very low mileage 3.2 motor (from crashed car) swapped in by John's son Tim. The motor is on Motronic but has been "hotted' up with lightweight flywheel, chip etc and so, despite my initial concerns about a 3.2, it spins up and down with alacrity whilst offering reliability and loads of torque!
So mechanically this car had just about the perfect specification I was looking for - additional power wasn't actually necessary as I'm conscious of exceeding my skill level and with about 250bhp is definitely fast enough! To boot, other nice features the car included all steel panels, strut brace, Bilsteins all round, turbo front struts, factory short shift kit, SC brake calipers, 7 & 8" fuchs, RS door cards, racing headers & exhaust, RS carpet set.
The only areas left for consideration were interior and bodywork. Bodywork was easy - the car is in great condition, the colour wasn't my first choice but was growing on me. Frankly I didn't have the stomach to change the colour or embark on major changes to arches(although I love the ST look, however I suspect there is a fashion/fad element to this and how could you go wrong with a lightweight RS.....) etc. or indeed lose months of use. That's aside from not wanting to commit the funds to an area that didn't enhance the user experience, and which could be tackled long term in any event....
As far as interior goes, this is a vital area for me - I consider this the enjoyment area, and where the connection is made. The existing interior was functional but not to my taste, and further I wanted to personalize in the style of period "Sports Purpose" car, although of course some liberties taken - I've basically "magpied" from various sources and created this!
It's been a fun journey and I've leant something about myself personally - the "museum manager" analogy that I used to justify (the selling of the E) to myself, family and friends has proven true and I've resolved that I'm more an enthusiast than a collector. Therefore a large part of my return is calibrated in enjoyment/use of the car and I need to be aware of that in future.
In fact I think this takes self inflicted pressure off to have an absolutely original car with attendant higher purchase cost, however flip side is possibly lower capital appreciation, however, refer to "return" comment above
Hope you enjoy the pictures and let me have feedback and/or ideas!
Cheers

Re: My new "Sports Purpose"
It's a predicament that many others have been in too Magnus - but, IMO, you've made the right move.
Although you can get a certain amount of satisfaction/enjoyment from seeing values/prices rise, it's often offset by increased worries about damaging your 'asset' or having it stolen - it's far more fun to use the cars for their intended purpose.
Well done - the car looks great (in those pictures that show up) !
* If it was mine I'd be tempted to add some bumper stripes ...

Re: My new "Sports Purpose"
Good move!
My 73T has had 3 engine swops in my time, the last being to a stock 3.2 with SSi exhaust and it's sports gearbox from a wreck 18 years ago. 65K miles laer and all I wish is it had a better sound track.
Suspension mods like yours many many moons ago and tweeks elsewhere.
The interior is 1/2 original and the other half as I like it and comfortable, even the same gear knob!
I gave up on originality from the first day I bought mine in '88 and never looked back, but stayed with narrow body as I love the small package of the original body work.
As an aside, the tinypic issue is due to a Windows 10 upgrade a week ago and they are working on it....

Re: My new "Sports Purpose"
Thanks for the words of understanding and encouragement all!
Apologies for the missing pictures - I've checked, retried, checked and retried again all to no avail. I think as per suggestion, it's a Windows 10 conflict issue.
Andy - strangely I have literally just ordered a full RS "decal" package from Chris at Fenn Lane (excellent value) as I wanted the stronger contrast of black against yellow and also the bumper stripes. In fact I've also ordered the little rear bumper reflectors to add some further detail (and lightweight originality looks-wise) to that area which looks a bit plain and "kit-car" with just the glassfibre bumper.....
In fact the more I think about it, the more I need some of those nice Cibie lights on front (adjacent headlights of course, not on bonnet).....hellishly expensive though....
Regards

Hi Magnus,
The car looks great and I think you have done the right thing. As enthusiasts, if we can't drive and enjoy the car then there is no point having it.
Can I ask what shifter you have fitted and where you got the 917 style wooden knob? How is the shift feel?

Re: My new "Sports Purpose"
Hi
I'm running the standard 915 gearbox, however I've obviously removed the rubber boot from the shifter to give a more stripped out/"racy" feel. The shifter is the Porsche Factory short shift kit - apparently much better than the non-factory offerings and reasonably priced. The shift knob came from Stuttgart Classica (UK based) who were great to deal with....except it's got brown shoe polish to tone it down. One has to "magpie" ideas from learned DDK members who'll use even curry powder to "patinate".....
Ralph - that's an Abarth steering wheel as I wanted something a little different to the Prototipo (and, as not as well known, hence better value for an older, patinated example). It's very similar to the 911R wheel.
I don't have side profile piccies and weather awful at moment, however, I'm planning on replacing the existing silver/gray RS decals with standard black version from Chris at Fenn Lane....piccies will follow!
Cheers

Re: My new "Sports Purpose"
Lovely car.
With that said, my absolute favourite cars are the original / special ones that still get used. Full respect to those of you with RS-es on track days and european tours, Ferrari 250s banging door handles at Revival, GT40s sideways in the rain, etc. Needs very deep pockets though, I suspect, to do it without it being a worry (back to your original point - need a car you can use without the fun being spoiled by those concerns).
Anyway, hope you enjoy and post more pics!
Cheers, Richard.
... and insightful analysis. Exactly that. They have to be used - absolutely no point otherwise. There are plenty of other asset classes with higher likely returns, better liquidity, lower holding costs, better regulation. Buy one of those to make money, buy a car to drive.Magnum wrote:Therefore a large part of my return is calibrated in enjoyment/use of the car and I need to be aware of that in future.

And that type of calibration comes from an enthusiast with passion for the cars - any other type comes from an investorMagnum wrote:Therefore a large part of my return is calibrated in enjoyment/use of the car and I need to be aware of that in future.
