I know a bit about old Jaguar rear ends (S Type in particular) and thought of the spreader plate under the brackets for the lower wishbone arms but did not know you had a Jaguar under way too.
Thought it was a trick pic to check if we were really paying attention!

The e type has been sitting in my barn for 18 years ,,so I thought I ought to get on with that too

However the porsche is good at emptying my wallet with the e type in 2nd place

I've not been on for a while, so great to see the fantastic progress on this. It's going to be fantastic!

Thanks also for the reference pictures of the sills. It always amazes me how random the original welds were. Also I'd love to know how they do the outer sill lower spot welds, as obviously you can't get in behind.

I use the single sided gun in the big spot welder, but only for cosmetic purposes, the structural welds being MIG plug at this point (single sided aren't for structural welds but perfect for wiring tabs, captive nuts and cosmetic weld-a-likes that might, possibly, add a little extra stiffness).

Wamer weather on the way, much nicer to work on your car(s) .

I thought that too about the spot welds along there. Would they pre-weld to the inner vertical sill? Would make door gapping very hard mind doing that.
Recently been working in the garage without a woollen hat on, so summer must have arrived....

The same thought has crossed my mind, but the way the inner (middle) sill slots in behind the rear inner wing would prevent this, and there are loads of other welds that also occur between inner (middle) and outer, e.g. jacking point.

There are no marks inside the car to suggest they clamp the whole sill structure up, and yet the welds are as strong, deep and well defined as others on the car. It's a mystery! Must crop up all the time in production of course. I guess the reality is it must be single-sided welding, but very powerful and perhaps levered off the car somehow (or externally) using something cunning, rather than a hooman manually doing it. I know from experience it's very easy to blow holes in the weld if you don't press hard enough, let alone achieving a well defined, full sized nugget. And I'm running a fairly powerful set-up as well.

Done a little more this week,,

All rear suspension stripped,blasted and painted 2k black
all new bushes bearings etc and I've been through the bags of bolts to get all correct fittings so it's now ready for attaching to my bodyshell

Spring plates mounted back to front oops ,,but only finger tight as I was more concerned about getting all fittings together








Might even get these on the car in the morning

Please forgive me if you do already know, but the banana arm pivot bolts go in the opposite way to how you have loosed them into the arm in your pic.
If you put the bolts in as you have them you cannot get he suspension off with the transmission in place later in life.
The torsion tube has deep 'dimples' pressed in them to allow the bolt in from the 'outside' so to speak.

I didn't know that , but to be honest I'd just thrown that lot together finger tight on the bench so I could check I'd got everything

Good to know if I've made an error though as I can imagine what a pain it would be if I needed to remove at a later date,but couldn't get the bolt out !!

I usually check the parts lists and make sure it's all correct when assembling on the car ....it's such a pain in the ass when everything's been away for blasting and plating as it gets mixed up

Can't wait to get it back on the wheels !

It's slow progress at the minute ,although I've got lots of bags and boxes of finished components so hopefully it'll start looking like a car soon

For me a rolling shell is confirmation that it's definitely going to happen

Those large bolts are so much easier to get into place the wrong way round, hence people fall into the trap, hence my comment.

Hi, the bolts in the trailing arms are correct as per your picture. Unless changed your car being 70/71 does not have the recesses in the torsion bar tube. That started (from memory) sometime in the 73 production year. So basically the bolts can only go in one way.
