I was worried that rebuilding my own car would attract lots of negative comments

Anyway ,,back to the story...........

I wasn't sure if the inner wing repair was a result of corrosion ,or of an accident,but I suspected the latter so I asked around ,but sadly much before I knew of the ddk

I contacted various bodyshop including one near me who does a lot of ferrari including some of Chris Evans cars , but I had a pig of a time convincing anyone to come and look at the car and almost gave up deciding I could sell the car in bits and get my money back ...then my friend suggested a friendly chap in scunthorpe who does loads of main dealer crash damage and had all the equipment ,,jigs..ovens,, laser measuring,,spot welders etc

He came to see the job and really impressed me with his knowledge of classic cars and of the big jobs he had tackled so off went my poor tangerine 911

Now at this point I'd love to tell you.....no WARN you about this garage but obviously I don't want to end up in court so I won't name and shame.......but if you're considering scunthorpe for repairs ,remember there's a c*** in scunthorpe !

I'd love to show pics of the car in his workshop but that would be obvious too....so I'm going to show how pigeon poo welding looks and how my poor 911 suffered at the hands of this butcher

This is just one area that my car didn't fit to the jig when it went to be rectified by a proper bodyshop

Not so important I guess if the suspension points are inches out of alignment ..I mean who would care about that??!

OMG. i once ended up in the hands of someone who had been at the same welding school as this guy..hope his bloody shop catches fire!

Did you end up in court ?

Re: negative comments for doing your own restoration - you certainly won't get any from me, its great to see other people getting stuck in and doing their own work Also, seeing the above pics makes me happy that I do all my own work - at least when I screw something up I know about it (and haven't PAID for it! )

in answer to your comment smallspeed , I always do my own work for the same reason as you ....I do make mistakes of course,,but I just take myself outside and give myself a good talking to...that usually sorts the issue

I normally do all my own welding and painting etc too,,but in this case I wasn't sure how to straighten a shell and this s c**t horpe guy talked the talk !!

Anyway as a warning this guy chopped the inner wing out when in my opinion it should have been properly repaired at the front

He admitted afterwards that he couldn't get measurement data from porsche for his all singing laser assisted jig
So obviously the suspension pan was probably in the wrong place ,,,and even to my novice eye ,the car arrived back at mine looking more bent than it left !

£5000........before you all ask.......I was gutted and couldn't sleep for about a week, and I already suffer the "black dog" from time to time so this didn't help at all

I contacted the repairer , and just explained that it had to be done again, I knew I'd probably no chance of getting the parts cost back,,and having taken legal advice understood I could be year or more pursuing this so I asked the guy to refund the labour element of the repair ,,,,just £1500

He threatened me and I was told to f**k off

I was reasonably correct with him and told him that we both knew the repair was poor ,but to avoid me having to tell everyone about it and to avoid feeling awkward or crossing the road if I saw him, I felt that refunding the labour part would help towards another repair and I concluded by telling him we could put it down to bad judgement ..he shouldn't have started it,,,and I shouldn't have taken it

Couldn't be fairer I thought !!!!

No I didn't end up in court ,,sometimes you just have to accept that it can take too long and life is short....

My lovely partner just reminded me that we are happy, healthy ,, and it's only a bit of money.........could be much worse

I still wanted to torch his shop though !!

I hope the porsche comes out as good,,but the parts are pretty dear in comparison

Welcome to ddk. I'm sure you will get all the help you need here. The shell looks pretty nice and you can't beat a bit of tangerine. The colour looks 'just right' in those photos.

the colour does look good especially the pic showing the car from the rear ..I'm trying to get a decent paint shade but not having much luck with the local suppliers....too yellow ,, or too red

Do you know anyone who could supply me the 2k in correct shade

I can't find a glasurit supplier near to me otherwise I'd try them

I'll call Brighton and see whether I can get a sample from them although so far the colour samples I've tried didn't look right

If you can do that level of work on the MGA I don't know why you'd want to put the Porsche out to anyone else
