Wheel recroming service for 1960's 911/912 ?

Post by rinkster »

Hi,

I'm hoping that someone on here had any recommendations for having early factory Steel wheels re-chromed ?. M have them on my 69 and the gutter around the outer rim
is corroded in places. I sure this is a common issue on these wheels so I guessed one of you may be able to point me in the right direction and let me have an idea of what I’m likely to be charges for 4 wheels.

I’m based in Hertfordshire so anywhere local would be a bonus !!

Thanks for your help

To do the job properly (& I don't think any reputable platers will entertain any other way) the rim has to be separated from the centre - hence it works out very expensive.

Alan Drayson @ Canford Classics has had several sets done so he would be worth contacting for a guide price.

New chrome wheels are available from Stoddard in the US but shipping will add quite a bit (plus any import charges you get stung for).

Another option - although not original - is to have them chrome powder coated - Mick Temple (MT on DDK) had a set done a few years ago & they turned out pretty well.

He posted pictures of them so you should be able to find them by searching the forum.

Worth a call to Paul at PRS, I know he is having some dechromed at the moment and may be able to offer advice.

Cheers

I know of a metal bashing place in near to Scarborough who specialise in banded wheels for VWs, and who are able to dismantle and re weld the wheels for you. You can then take the bits to a chrome platers of your choice.

I used them to do one wheel as a test, but because the whole process took so long due to me having to find out at every stage what and how to do it and who to use, I ended up getting the others powder coated in the chrome effect finish.

So, my current dilemma is that I have a lovely looking spare , but the rest of my wheels are powder coated in the chrome look. I would still like to get all the wheels refinished properly, but I suspect that the way to go would be to purchase some wheels with the correct or near date stamp, which would then help me to justify the expense!

If you go powder coated/painted we've had a few things metal painted by these guys and it's pretty impressive, apparently the paint is 90% metal ?!?

so Just thought I'd update this thread by sying that Doug Heath in Baldock, Herts is no longer taking on this work.

I spoke with him and he's a great guy but said that chroming wheels is a nightmare tho get the right finish and that it just not viable for him anymore.
