914 battery charging + aux lights

Driving back from Wareham on Sunday night using the lights for the 1st time I noticed the volt meter at about 10 volts (was around 12 volts during the day time).

The new battery is now flat so I'm wondering it there is a relay somewhere that may be dodgy? I guess I can test the alternator output when its running?

Also the aux front lights in the bumper don't work at all - should they come on during main beam, low beam or both? I will check the wiring this weekend to make sure they are connected etc.

should be putting out about 14.4v volts across the battery terminals whilst running, check your regulator is earthing properly or at fault. Otherwise start pointing your finger at the alternator, if you point hard enough it might get scared and start working properly. Also worth trying another battery or testing the current one before thinking about removing the alternator.

Check your fuses and contacts/earth on the aux light bulb holders. Do you mean the parking/side lights.

Hi Nige,

Where does the regulator live - is it on the far left hand side on the engine bay looking towards front of car as part of the block of relays?

Aux lights - I mean the ones in the grilles as part of the bumper below the pop up ones, not the side lights in the front wings. I think they have halogen bulbs in.

Dunno, sorry. Mines got the same motor as yours but in a 911 body, I have a haynes manual for a 914 at home can find out later.

Are they fog lights then? Operated by a switch on the dash?

Just a question for Roger, who built your 2.3? its a Type 4 isn't it?

Yes I'm thinking part 8, the regulator could be playing up as the cover was off and I found it in the front boot (sounds like front bottom where lemonade is made - where am I going with this??) when I bought it.

I reckon someone was playing with it just before I bought it, ta for that info.

Would be great if we could get access to this PET system online, imagine having that as part of the website, I know its a dealer thing, got one emailed to me fo the gear lever section

Can punters buy it?

Whilst not exactly on-line PET, Mittelmotor has all the diagrams on line.

Yes it is a Type 4 Nige - built by L A Performance (against whom I now have a county court judgement and a warrant for bailiffs to execute) and then rebuilt by Crispin Manners (Oaktree Garage) in Devon.

I know it sounds like a lot of trouble but if I were doing it again I would send it to Jake Raby in the States - I doubt it would cost more and would be a much better product.

Kevster - if your regulator is duff it's the same one that's used on an externally regulated altenator Beetle. Don't pay 'porsche' prices.

I got a solid state regulator from Lucas for about £12! They confirmed its the same as a beetle one. Martin cheers for the PET - its blimming brill - no more guessing
