ingnition switch query

I definitely need a new ignition switch as the knackered one in there at the moment is preventing the the starter motor from disengaging.

However what I am not sure about do I need the front bit where the key goes, or the back (plug / relay / thingy with prongs and is round) bit.

The front bit is quite expensive and the back bit is pretty cheap in comparrison.

Obviously sods law says that I need the expensive bit, but can anyone give me hope that all I need is the back bit?

Does the switch split into two halves, the electrical part and the mechanical part ? I guess the electrical part is broken, does the switch feel mechanically OK ?
You can disconnect the big yellow wire from the switch temporarily, just to make sure you've diagnosed the fault correctly. Perhaps fit a "Push to start" button between the ignition switch and the starter (In series, in the yelow wire) At least you'll still be able to use the car

Hi Tim

Pretty certain its the switch. having isolated the starter from the ignition, and got the fule pump going of the ignition and then got the starter going from the battery, and all worked as it should.

I might try that ideas a temporary fix, fairmile and all that.

I'm just not sure if its the mechanical turning part, or the elecrtical part of the ignition switch

I might see whats on ebay and if there is something at a decent price get it and have a tinker.

The electrical part is known to wear out and is very common problem area.

I replaced mine when the electric windows started playing up and it cured the problem.

The difficulty I had was that the problem was intermittent and therefore very hard to pin down.

Problem solved in the tried and tested method of throwing money at it

Pinpointed to variably iffy spring in the bit the key goes into.

Top man Andy in parts at Hatfield Porsche many thanks for your help with part numbers and suggestions of sourcing parts at a decent price. Much appreciated.
