Any experience of 123Ignition ??

Post by roadiesean »

Hi all,

Its been suggested that electronic ignition will make miraculous changes to the way my little 912 revs and runs, with 123ignition being suggested. Anyone got experience of these units ?? Also, the tune vs the standard version, any thoughts on the necessity to have two separate ignition curves switchable (beyond sounding like a super cool idea !!!)

No experience on a 912, but I put one on my TR4A and it was great. Very reliable, and the guy at the rolling road tune-up said it was really useful to get the curve you want with whatever set-up you have.

My engine resembles a 912 engine a lot, albeit a VW type 4 engine.

When we were finetuning the engine we tried several ignitions: the well known 009 ignition did well, but not optimally and the 050 didn't quite get there at low revs, but did okay at high revs. We even tried a Bosch 022 and that showed a nice curve, but we were convinced that it could be better...

When we installed the 123-ignition (set to 009 characteristics) the engine showed its true potential! The curve was great and we 'won' 3 bhp in comparison to the 022.

I have the standard 123 and think it is awesome. It made a great difference to my car but that could be because the old dizzy was tosh?

I am looking forward to giving the engine a proper tuning and then see where we are at.

Very nicely made piece of kit.
