Couple of questions - flappy temp gauge and floppy gearshift

Post by roadiesean »

Couple of questions on my '67.

1. The temp gauge works and when warming is a bit 'jumpy' ie it flicks up and down but not too bad. On a steady throttle when warm it sits steady at about 1/3 across the gauge. However when you accelerate it oscillates wildly across until you settle back to steady throttle. Any idea why ?? Very off putting and mildly worrying I must say !!

2. The gearshift although excellent in quality and synchro has masses of sideways movement when in gear. It's a dogleg 1st 5 speed. It feels like bushings or something. When I say sideways movement I mean probably 4-5" at the gear knob. Could it be a DIY fix ??

Thanks all.

Sean

I think that it needs bushes in the gearshift - it has a lot more movement than my car has - it's worth changing as many as you can.

I didn't notice the temp gauge moving about when I drove it - worth checking obvious things first like connections at both ends!

check the grub screws arent loose .. one that holds the cup onto the rod under the shifter ( need to remove shifter for this one ) and the other at the coupling between shifter rod & gearbox ( remove inspection plate by rear seats )

Thanks all for your help. Where do I go to get a bushing kit all in the one place ?? Is there anywhere that would do such a thing ?

And thanks James, I will do the grub screw checking !

Thanks Stuart, so I've bought said parts, how hard a job is it to pull the gearshift apart and change all the bits ?? I have a workshop manual (thanks for that too Stuart, it arrived today !) so I have the info and the pictures, I just don't want to end up with a undriveable car if I get stuck !!!!

Ta all.

I did mime a few years ago, it made a massive difference to the gear change (5 speed)
I don't think it took long to do but my car came apart easily with no stuck fastenings. Just make sure you get the 'timing' of the shift rods correct and lube it all up.

Thanks very much Nick, but I'm not sure what you mean by the "timing" ???

I think Nick means that if you can currently get into all your gears easily everything is pretty well lined up so make sure you make some marks on the rods and couplings so you can get it all lined up into the same place again?

So I did the shifter bush and the guide bushing this morning. One hour. But of a mess, BOOM !!!! Done.

And what a brilliant brilliant difference. The guide bushing was the culprit it was utterly knackered. I have a photo but need to get it off my phone and onto Picasa to put it on here. Man it was fully chewed up though !!!!

Now, as the legend(ary arse) Mike Brewer would say "it's like a Winchester rifle, all snick, snick, snick!"

You little beauty. Just need some lock wire to do the bolt thag holds the gearshift onto the rod.

So proud!!
