912 Targa : A slow restore / refresh

2012 was one of those years for me and the race car.
That thing so nearly was broken up/skipped etc yet you keep pressing on.(engine/box)

It all came good for me in 2013 but 2014 has been 50:50.

My 73T/3.2 owned since 1988 has become an irritation on top of the hillclimb car in 2014, and I too have pondered a complete sell up and buy a nice modern Cayman 3.2S until I'm in a coffin, and forget all this Classic Car romance....

The fact that the birds n bees are still chirping and hummin' is a Very Good Sign that she is still with you.
Take a rest to relieve the $$$$ and re-group?

Neil .... Stick at it ( the sex that is ) ..... Classic cars test me all the time ( see my 'wobble' last week ) but as I keep telling anyone new to thus, there will always be the lows, but there will also be the highs

Newer cars are no better though, just the bills can be even higher as you tend to give them to a garage to sort

If my mum had started a conversation like that, I'd have been out of there in a shot !!

Hang in there Neil. We all experience project block now and again. I often find myself traling U Tube to get my Mojo back. Some of the Magnus Walker stuff is very re-motivating.

It appears that a nut from the air filters had somehow worked it's way loose and got down into the cylinder. cylinder ok and head can easily be fixed with an air bush (I don't quite understand that but ...) and no extra charge from Max!!

We are switching to k & n filters to stop this happening again. Heart breaking for Max to have to take everything off and put on again.

I'm very glad that this had ended well.

The filter!



The pipe is connected via two nuts on the bottom. One is missing. When the carbs where replaced this pipe wasn't taken on / off so I guess Max could of said nothing to do with us but he didn't.



What the nuts looked like after being hit a few times. I still can't get my head around this design! Max was saying something about after market. This really seems like an accident waiting to happen. I also have to go and have a better look at engine because how does it get in when the inlet value is only adjusted to open 0.15??

I had the exact same thing happen to me with a beetle. Nut from a pancake type filter straight down the inlet. Jammed the the valve open but didn't get in to the cylinder. Made a lot of noise on the drive home. Head off pressed the valve down to release the nut and bolted it all back together. It ran for years after that.

Hope it's all sorted in time for Scotland Neil.

The 0.15 will be the tappet clearance not the valve lift, once the valve opens fully it must have allowed the nut to drop in.

Very unlucky it happened but very lucky it didnt cause more damage.

Valve lifts about a cm off the seat. Lucky escape, lots of nasty things can happen

I think i would rather run without filters than that shambles.
Nuts should have been Nyloc at minimum..

K&N are the right choice imho.

Very lucky escape and you obviously have a good partner in that engine man, nice to read.
