Fuel not reaching filter!!!

Post by delkel »

Hi everyone

I have just sorted the 050 dizzy out on the 912 and the carb linkage so it is finally going as expected, took for a couple of miles around the block and all was ok . Parked it up and and tick over was very erratic!!! What could that be? Usually ticking over sweet!

Finally it ran out of fuel! The fuel wasn't getting as far as the filter! So I think a blockage , either at tank, in pipes or fuel pump given up!
So the first thing I am thinking of doing is testing fuel exit from tank! Then check pipes which I will change anyway.
Then pump, how do I test this? What size pipes should I use? Is it worth me changing pump to an electric one, if so what one?

Is this the correct procedure ? All advice is very welcome and appreciated.

Thanks y'all

I have an electric pump on my car but the view seems to be that the mechnical one work well/better. If it isn't getting to the filter then you aren't at the pump yet so maybe clean out the lines first. See if help then have a look at the inside of your tank? That could be a cause of crap getting in the pipes?

If you disconnect the fuel pipe from the pump and carefully suck on the pipe you should quite easily be able to draw a mouthful of petrol(try to stop before you get too much in your mouth as its not very pleasant/good for you). If you can its probably the fuel pump. As its a diaphram type it works by dragging the petrol down the pipe towards the pump and then up to the carbs with a non return valve stops it flowing back. You can get a rebuild kit from Max at revival with a new diaphram and gaskets and its easy to rebuild.

The only other thing that has happened to me occasionally is fuel vapour lock. Because the fuel pump sits above the exhaust manifold. If you leave the car ticking over for long periods in warm weather, or have a leaking gasket on the manifold, the heat soaks through and gets the pump hot and the fuel vapourises. You then have to wait for it to cool down and if starts working again.

I've had a mouthful of petrol..,.. Never again.

Get a pressure / vacuum gauge. Less than a tenner (draper). Make sure the pump both sucks and blows, not just one. Then carefully check the flow.

Hi David, if your rubber fuel lines are more than a few years old then change them as modern fuels can rot them out making them collapse inside, give everything a good clean out including the tank.
I may be paranoid but have 4 inline filters ! I have an electric pump in the smugglers box, that has a filter built in, I have a pre-pump filter. Then there is a filter in the engine bay and another in the fuel pressure regulator also located in the engine bay.
I change the first filter every year as I catches the crap coming out of the tank .
good luck, nick.

I went to see my baby today and the filter was full of fuel!!! So no mouthful of petrol for me. The lines are ok but will be changed for some " give it your best shot ethanol" ones! I think the prob was vapor lock. It wasn't sitting and ticking over for too long before it conked. I will also put in an electric pump and fresh filter .
Thanks again guys
