Just a thought, is your tank venting properly? If not you will create a vacuum as the fuel is drawn out, stopping the flow after a time.

Many thanks for all the replies and apologies for the late reply,eventually it related to the mechanical fuel pump which although rebuilt once, needed to be rebuilt again.Also the rotor arm was defective and some tuning was required to the carbs.
A combination of problems seemed to have caused the problem.
