Quick update on the gearbox.....as I sit at Frankfurt Airport

The 911/01 flanges and the 914 flanges have the same shaft dimensions...








but with one major difference. The recess at the end for the inner part of the flange measures 10.0mm for the 911/01 and 7.0mm for the 914. The plan is the machine down the 914 flange so that it has the same 10.0mm recess...I thought that the resistance I felt rotating the flanges by hand was due to adding the oil...but it is a result of the inner part not sitting in the flange correctly, and in turn not allowing the Sun gear to rotate freely.

IGNORE THE SUN GEAR COMMENT



The next problem is illustrated below...the inner part #3 needs to align with #15 I have a feeling that I may need some jiggling to get it back in line...this is why everyone says only to remove one side at a time



Very helpful advice from Mr Bainbridge:

had a look at this end with a diff and flanges, all looked good, from your
diagram, parts No'2 are the sun gears and should be pulled on the splines on
the end of the drive flange, with the bolt No14 and the inner part No3 with
the circlip No 4 attached to No 3 to stop it pulling through the sun gear,
No' 12 and No' 3 become one with the bolt?washer No' 14/13 tightened, so the
sun gear is traped on the end of the output shaft between the end of the
splines and the No' 3 with the circlip No'4 fitted round it, the end folat
will now be from the sun gear and the outer end of the diff where the shaft
is pushed in, with the bolt tight.


I had a quick go yesterday and managed to get one side refitted using the 911/01 flange. It moved freely and had the correct IN and OUT Float movement Mike describes. I will try again with the machined 914 flanges..... but in another 2 weeks

Warning lights etc all in order ! Original idea of using toggle switches has been ditched in favour of using rebuilt original stalks and switches, looks so much better and cleaner...

Hands-up, I cannot take the glory for this solution. I shamelessly stole the idea from Mike (ibmiked) on Early S Registry. Mike had made a video of his installation which shows the function perfectly, simple effective Engineering at its very best:

I needed one of those on Saturday. I managed to drop my engine lid on my head!!

Hi Dougie,

I think it would work fine, the spring is strong. The more vertical the spring in the upright position, the stronger the setup will be. The only issue might be if you used the original hinges, the Spring might foul on the hinge as it folds down. You would just need to check the alignment.
