1970 T - Warm Rod

Post by DanG »

I won't bore you all with words as yet, but the short story on this is that it was built in September 1969 and I bought I last year as I couldn't bear to see it dying in a breakers yard in California.

Missing engine and gearbox, so never going to be a matching numbers car, just fun to drive and hopefully nice to look at. A lot of plans for suspension and handling upgrades.

Pics of it arriving...

It's had some work done to the rear arches with steel flares welded in, and an original colour Respray some years back.

Solid wings and floors, very rotten front pan, and a decent collection of dents, dings and scrapes to work on.

So good and bad, but the work begins.....

If you want an engine and gearbox I have one out of a 69T, and a 2.4T motor alone

Panels are off the car and being striped back to bare metal.

Thankfully the hood and engine lid are rust free, an after a few hours of work with various shaped chunks of metal and wood they are ding and dent free.

However, rust has been found.

Car needs new outer sills on both sides, and new kidney bowls, and probably a door shut on the drivers side whilst we are in there.

Out came the plasma cutter, and thankfully the inners are perfect.

It's been placed on the jig whilst these and other cutting is done and is apparently remarkably straight, which is great.

Sills were cut out and inners found to be perfect. So outlets have been cut, welded and leaded into place.

New front pan was cut and replaced too - pics to follow.

Doors had their dings sorted out and the bonnet and engine lid are all hammered flat and were superbly rust free.

Etch primed and ready for the rest of the car to be completed prior to spraying.

Suspension test fitted too, including a potential turbo cross member and Carerra front roll bar - jury still out on that one...

Rear adjustable spring plates off for zinc plating too...

Engine plans are a little up in the air at the moment, with a third option thrown into the mix late last week.

Either, 2.0, 2.2 or 2.7, but with stainless headers and a twin out exhaust, maybe even a three out and some intake trickery.

This was never going to be matching numbers, just as fun to drive as I can do on a 'budget'.

Box was going to be a nice rebuilt 915 I have already, but another potential option came up last week.

Needs a bit of research...

Meanwhile, adjustable spring plates sourced, stripped, re coated and superpro bushes added.

Cool project.

Have you any more photos of the rear arches? In the "just arrived" photos they look quite narrow, in the bare metal shot they look quite wide, I'm confused.

Have you had any thoughts on colour?
I love the smell of burnt rubber and hydrocarbons in the morning, it smells of......victory.

The red does hide some of the width, as do the rear bumpers etc.

Couple from the side...

So today, with a day off and out of London I did the following.

Took this:

And replaced it with this:

With new bearings, wheel studs and using three different types of grease!

Very satisfying work.

Callipers had worried me after some feedback on here, but I have confirmed that the inner seals were replaced and now having fitted them, the clearances are all perfect.
