Schnelle 550 Spyder (ex Sammio 550 spyder)

Post by redrobin911 »

HI Guys

I've finally got the moulds and jigs back home to Belfast thanks to a few friends in the UK.

I've now got a website up and running but with limited content at the moment - this will change.

My car related interests will go under the name of "Rennwagen" translating from German as racing car and the car will now be known as the Schnelle 550 Spyder - Schnelle translating as "fast".

Please see the web-site for further information.

www.rennwagen.co.uk

I'll also be offering parts for the 550 as well as selling other Porsche related parts - mostly for older air cooled 911's and will have some other info on the RSR's I'm backdating at the mo (the RSR backdate that's on this site).

Needless to say the web site will get updated considerably over the next few weeks so be patient.

Regarding pricing for the VW based kit as the was produced previously will remain very similar to the previous owner i.e. c.£2k for all body work (LHD or RHD) and front and rear metal work to fit to a modified non beam axle VW chassis - pre 73. For an extra cost we can supply a rolling chassis or have the work carried out on a supplied chassis. I'm also going to be developing another chassis trying to create something that looks and handles much like the original car, but that will follow in due course as and when it gets developed.

Transportation prices along wit a dealer in the UK will be announced soon so keep an eye on the web-site and this forum for updates.

We are going to start the construction of our VW based demonstrator so i'll be posting pics on DDK and keeping the web-site up to speed as that progresses.

Thanks to all that have been supportive over since i've bought into this business and I look forward to discussing the kit in further detail as we all progress.

Really strange , saw a van tonite leaving Wareham signwritten as Sammio cars. They are based in Wareham making a sort of 50's style open sports car I wonder if "it" started life as a 550 rep'.

HI thanks again for all your support - i intend to do this project justice, i've never really been a "kit car" fan but always been a Porsche fan. The opportunity to build a decent 550 is well worth putting the effort into - non of us can afford the £1m+ for the real deal, somewhat in the same way as we can't afford some early 356's esp speedsters.

Re Sammio cars - the do make another "spyder" thats a nice period 50's sportscar - not really a replica of anything more a tribute to cars of that era. Gary, who runs and owns sammio cars (and a true gent) is so busy with these that he decided to sell the Porsche 550 project as he had no time to develop it properly and give it the time and effort the project deserves. Thats's when I stepped in.

Re seeing his van today - isn't it funny when you see something totally out of the blue that relates to something else - funny old world.

Thx again to all - will keep you all posted.

We've been doing some work on the body, firstly we made some heavy parts from the moulds then glassed them together to see what the final body shape was going to be like. To be honest I wasn't pleased - there were so many areas not right so I've made the decision to rectify the all the bodywork faults then make new moulds for the new body - has to be done right now.

I've got a good bodywork guy who has been working his magic - 140 hours of it to be exact!!!!

What you see below is where we've got to - i.e. 90% complete.

Image

The general shape is now much better - although being 100mm longer than the original 550 the lines look well, gaps around the bodywork are consistent and not far away from the the original which was bit "gappy"

Image

From the back quarter lines still look very pleasing.

Image

Front the front it's also taking shape but the headlamps need straightening up as turning in a little too much.

Hope to keep the work progressing......

Sorry - pics taken with my phone
