Making a build site

I want to throw some speedster build pics and words online - never done a build diary or created a webpage.

I have just set up a page on google sites but the domain name is sooooo looooooong.

Can anyone recommend a good place to go and build a website Even if I have to pay for the domain name as a one off without further annual costs?

If you're happy using the current web creator, then carry on as you are, purchase the domain you want separately and then reroute it via the webpage you are building. Instructions will be with the domain you purchase - freeparking.co.uk for instance.

e.g: myrepbuild.co.uk will cloak and hide unfeasiblylongnameforthisdomainthatcanonlybereadbythosewithtimeontheirhands.co.uk

Or feed the long domain url into tinyurl.co.uk and use that as your feeder name. Not as good though

maybe take a look at webforwarding? you can buy an address for not much money, then point that at the home/index page you have on google.. ..all the links on your page within google will be relative to each-other (ie ../home, ../build, ../photos) so the site should work from there.

you can also set-up the address to "mask" so every page has the same address in the address bar (http://www.pilgrimbuild.com or whatever, rather than the long google address) however i think thats considered bad form in internet circles, and it will prevent you "copy and pasting" the page address to link directly

im not sure if its a one off charge for registering a domain or if its by the year, but generally they're pretty cheap if you don't want a .com or a .co.uk

i brought my address with hosting from streamline.net.. been with them for 5yrs now, had one issue with their email server which effected a lot of their customers and lasted 4hrs, otherwise its been plain sailing; cost is not that much for a "home" site and comes with loads of email addresses and things too. Infact they're so cheap our rabbits (well, amie) had a website for 3yrs with a blog and a link to their webcam

You can purchase a domain via google sites (or elsewhere) and redirect the .com address to a google sites 'home' page so you don't need to use the long google site name.

The g-site system is quite restrictive and is not setup for full scripting but it is easy for someone who don't want to learn HTML. You can use it to host a full scripted site using a work around but it's not really what the system is for.

Bargainhost offer cheap and cheerful web hosting. I use them for my sites. Tech responses are quick and though I've had a couple of bad experiences with their servers going down over the past 5 years they are generally good value.

If you do buy your own domain point your email Service over to google - their service is free, fantastic, and they are one of the rare providers who offer an IMAP server (so email works well across multiple computers and phones) I sync Email across iPhone, iPad, and 2 macs (and webmail) without issues, all using my own domain name, all via google.
