IVA questions, can anyone help ?

I am contemplating building another speedster , I really enjoyed building the one that I have, and fancy another go . However I built mine years ago and therefore have no idea about IVA .
Can any one help with the following:-

If I use a pre 72 chassis will the vehicle still be tax exempt ?
Once it has got through IVA can I legally change things like steering wheels, wing mirrors, lighting, seating etc to make it look more authentic ?

Any help would be greatly recieved . also any advice regarding IVA. ie How scarry is it, what improvements have to be made from the pre SVA/IVA to get the car through ?

First if you use a pre 72 chassis the tax exemption will be lost going through the IVA as it will be classed as a brand new motor and will not need a MOT for the first 3 years as with all new cars. So in my opinion, it's no longer viable to pay more for a tax exempt chassis unless you want a older registration number but again you will loose that number plate. It will be replaced with another of the same year. Example my reg of the donor was FJF 20C, once Iva'd and registration processed it new reg is FEA 724C. Stupid l know but it's so they can delete it from the system being tax exempt and give it a brand new identity basically.

With regards to changing the car legally, you can't. Just to the cover the topic briefly, if you buy a brand new mini for example, and customise it with after-market parts that would change the way it left the factory, therefore it would be illegal. Basically all new cars have to conform to the IVA reg's plus more etc, so if you change any car from what it was when it left the factory its illegal. So let's look at it in a bigger picture. Its my opinion 90% of cars on the road have been modified/ customised in some form which makes them all illegal and we don't hear of any of these being removed from our roads, so again in my opinion get it IVA'd and changed it cosmetically to what it should look like.

Don't be put of by the IVA process, or listen to the horror stories to much. I personally had no problems with it. As long as you do your research and cover the things which will related to the car in question, you will be fine.

Off on a tangent, I mentioned to a fellow DDK'er that it was impossible to import cars older than 5 years into the Philippines. Quick as a flash he said "why not get it ('it' being a '72 911) SVA/IVA'd?", thus making it a 'new' car and a possible import!
Sounds logical to me, but what do I know.....
One suggestion generates more thoughts - can the car have a dual personality? I.e. a pre '73 car here and a 'new' car there??
Any wise thoughts anyone?

Good to hear that theres no real point in getting a pre 72 doner car, Mid to late 70s bugs seem to be a lot cheaper, and easier to come by.(and I wouldnt feel so bad cutting up a basket case late 1303).

Not so good to hear about the legality of making changes !! not sure how things would stand with insurers, especially when it comes to them paying out !!! I guess I need to look closely at what IVA "aproved" items will fit in with how I want the car to look !!!! ( Im thinking PGO look-a-likey)

Mines on a 70 chassis but iva lost exempt status. Iva is arse. I have age related plates but doubt legally whether i should be using black and silver plates tho

I see the logic but it wouldn't work. The reason why a kit has to be IVa'd is because it not mass produced or the chassis/body has been radically altered.

So to take a 72 road legal car through the iva you would fail at the first hurdle, the criteria. Now if you altered the 72 body to a pre 69 body ( short wheel base) the criteria would be met. Intresting thought. Only problem l see is the 911 has a monocoque design. Not sure how that would be accepted as most kits have a purpose built independent chassis. Saying that there are a few kits like DNA that utilise a toyota mr2, which cut the old panels of and bond the new panels on to change the body shape into a ferrari rep. Not sure if they need to be IVA'd though. Anybody?? Alot of work though dont you think.

At least you could get a classic into your winter retreat as a new car, as it would be classed as a new car???

if your thinking of doing a PGO look-alike you wont have to change much at all. As they are more modern equipped.
