Where to run wiring

Post by bonerp »

Does anyone know where to run wiring? I assume its down the righthand edge of the sill/sub chassis, then split to battery tray, engine area and rear light? Instructions are about as clear as mud!

Also I have lots of wires for under the dash but not much space for them. Assume people have just bonded wiring holders to the fibreglass?

For the front, does the loom run through into the boot area or under the bodywork?

none of the supplied lights appear to have earth leads, so I am fitting these now - assume this is correct?

Battery isolator - have most people added one to the battery tray/back of engine, feeding the rear through to the battery box? I just want to keep the battery isolated during the build and this seems the best way.

there is a fuse panel - about 6 fuses or so - none fitted. Anyone know what the ratings are? NOW answered :
1 Side lights = 10a
2 Head lamps = 20a
3 Horn/Hazard = 10a
4 Wipers = 15a
5 Indicators = 10a
6 Reverse = 10A

Seems there is no fuse covering starter/alternator from Battery!!!! Will an inline fuse be ok for this?

thanks
Paul

Paul this is the route chesil use, may help you out?? All the cables run internalyof the body exept for the lights at the end of the cable runs etc.

Got my battery isolator going through the rear bulkhead so you switch it off/on via engine compartment and the terminals back onto the battery area so easy to connect up. Also acts as a anti theft devise as you need to go into the engine bay to switch it on instead of the cockpit. Pro's and cons were to can fit it really.

Defo have a fuse covering the charge circuit, l think l used a 45amp.

The lack of relays in the pilgrim loom struck me as problematic. As far as i can see on my loom there is one - for the headlights.

Can someone mark up which wire the main fuse should go in for the charge circuit?

Its the Big red one depending on your loom?? that comes of the alternator with the nut on, connection (b+), it goes to the battery. Fuse it before the battery :)

I dont have a relay at all in my loom!!! there is a flasher socket but thats it. I will add one for the heated screen and another for the wiper motor - if there isnt a headlight relay, then that will be added too .

I def want to add a fuse immediately at the battery. Dont fancy the wiring melting then catching a fire inside that box in case of a fault!!!

I have ordered an isolator with an alternator switch in it.

thanks all

Where can i get the relays and flasher from, are they car specific? VW? Having had another look at mine, you are quite right, there isn't even a headlight relay, more to the point the wires shown on the diagram going to the headlight relay don't appear to be in the loom either. Looks like a recipe for disaster to me.

To say i am less than impressed with the pilgrim loom is an understatement. I'm not convinced the main brown battery cables are up to the job either, having seen the size of those used on previous kit car looms i have used. Makes me wonder what else they have overlooked

Threefiftysix they have proberly used the thin wall wire. Basically a modern wire which all new cars use as opposed to the old thick chunky wires in the older cars. Technology ehh

Chesil only use x1 relay for lights and x1 flasher unit..

Ah, okay, you learn something everyday, let's hope you are right. Thanks for the links. I'm tempted to get someone in to do the wiring the more i think about it, i can connect a loom up, but i'm not too keen on modifying it myself.

Anyone care to cast their eye over the diagram posted earlier and see if they have missed anything else off safety wise? This assumes the loom matches the diagram, which in my case it doesn't. :|

Assuming (looking at the diagram) blue is dipped beam plug this into 86 on one relay. 85 goes to earth (black) and 87 goes to the dipped beam headlight (blue/red). 30 goes to a fused battery connection. According to the diagram pilgrim use fuse 2, but it doesnt hurt to use another as they havent even added the relay!

Same applies of the high beam circuit but the high beam wires out of the switch into the relay are blue/black (86) to blue/white (87) out of the relay.

If 86 is back to front on the relays just swap them over.

Assume chesil dont use a relay on the low beam. Only for the high beam. Unless its a double pole switched relay?

I will ring VWP tomorrow for the sockets and relays, and fuse housings

Something very odd... I posted a copy of the XXXXX loom in this thread, which has now vanished... :?: Something i said?

Anyway, I have another wiring question. Here is a loom diagram again which may or may not be from a manufacturer (i have to say that apparently :bom: ):

Image

There is a 'voltage stabiliser' wired into the instruments, not the regulator for the dynamo. What is it from? Anyone got a source for it?

Cheers.
