Progress ?

Post by butzsi »

Decided to remove the cylinder head after I discovered that the exhaust rocker had no more adjustment left, the adjuster screw was at the end of the thread( the rocker arm starting to bear on the valve spring cap).

Expecting the worst, I was pleasantly surprised to find that due to a previous engine problem (broken rings breaking through the ring lands on the piston or broken valve edges),
new valves had been fitted and a new piston in the not too distant past. The valve guides are also in good shape but the exhaust valve seat has been re-cut beyond the wear limit and really needs to be replaced - the factory wear limit is reached when the head of the valve (fully seated) is 3.5mm below the surface of the cylinder head and I reckon this one is down by 7mm or so.

If I have a new seat fitted then I can have the impact damage voids repaired by welding and then refacing the entire sealing and combustion face.

The engine is now much more dismantled than I originally thought necessary but the outlook is good.

Fingers crossed Chris

how's the rest of the work coming on?

Mine is progressing, albeit slowly. It's nearly all stripped, have had the rear wings, footplates, wheels and some of the brackets gently shotblast which look OK (apart from a rust hole in the front wheel which I wasn't expecting). Motor out next to get that stripped and see what we have....

Most of the parts removed from the main frame have now been blasted and powder coated and are sitting on shelves in bubblewrap waiting for the day that they can be re-fitted. The main problem is that I still do not know what wet (spray) primer I can use that is compatible with both the original paint finish and today's gun finish top coat products on the main frame without stripping paint completely. I do not want to media blast the frame to remove all previous paint because of potential ingress to engine etc - I did not want to remove the engine but.............

I brush painted the frame on my last tractor with coach enamel(took me 3+ months doing bit by bit) but really want to do a spray job this time.

I still feel that I will be removing more before the actual rebuild starts but aim for an appearance at the Fairmile before next winter, oh yes, I will be looking to drive it on the road rather than trailer to (local) events.

Just waiting for Nick at Redtek to finish replacing the valve seat inserts and then I can start the assembly of engine. Last items of bodywork remaining to be done are the rear mudguards, bonnet and mainframe. Hopefully the rising temperatures over the next few weeks will tempt me into a bit of evening overtime on the tractor.

Great to see progress Chris

Mine is now fully stripped (apart from the engine) and all the parts I think I need sourced other than any nasties that may lurk inside the motor....
