@*%&~#/ paintshop

Post by bonerp »

Cars now ready, and I've got to say its looking good. The panels fit superbly and the quality of the finish is very much first class.

HOWEVER, I had budgeted £2500 with a top ceiling of £3000. Even when the new owners of the business took on the job in Oct, they knew what my price band was.1

Owing to the delays over the last 2 months and previously (which I hasten to add were not the new guys fault - previous delays were caused by the previous gimp, I would have expected it to be nearer £2500.

Imagine my surprise when they same up with £4350......

I told them I don't have that and I protested strongly about it. They have stated that materials cost :

Materials and sundries - £994!
Undersealer and labour £605
12 litres of condor yellow and lacquer £717
Labour £2070!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just walked out after some discussion saying that its 50% of my original budget over. They said they were a little surprised but failed to tell me where the cost was heading during the build.

I'm not going to mention names yet. But no doubt I will if this is not negotiated downwards.

Suggestions on how to handle this?

I was all ready for delivery tonight and even left work early. Now I am just miffed.

Bloody hell. Is that what a paint job costs??? I'll have to look at the budget again  even your original budget seems very high to me.

pay him by cheque but tell him your not happy.
Take car ..... cancel cheque. Pay him £1200 by cheque.
Let him take you to court. He loses because you have been quoted £1200 to have job done elsewhere, so obviously he has over charged you. Definitely worth a try, at worst it gives you a little more time to save up some money to pay his bill.

How many cars did you have painted ?

Wow!!!

First of all the materials is way too high. £900 odd pounds for filler, fiberglass, papers ect. There is no way it would be that much.

secondly, 12 litres of paint!!!!! We reguarly paint vw transporter vans and we put extra paint on as they are generally show paint jobs and the most we would put on is 5-6 litres and thats on a large van inc roof. I would say they have used a maximum of 5 litres at a very large push. And thats going some!!!

£600 for underseal and labour!!!

The only one that i can see to be somewhere near would be the labour as they may have spent a lot of time with the prep work as at £40 per hour thats 50 hours which could quite easily been ammased.

I think that they are confused and have charged you for all the materials they have used in the whole bodyshop!

I would ask for a breakdown for the materials, underseal and also ask to see a reciept for the 12 litres of paint from their supplier as even that price seems expensive for the 12 litres of paint!!

If they dont want to comply then i would inform them that you will take them to trading standards to get the details as you are deffinatley being ripped off.

Cheers

thanks guys I thought 12 litres of paint was high! They have also quoted 15 litres of primer....!

I had 3 quotes of up to £3000. Most were happy to quote between £2000-£2500.

I will ask them for a breakdown per item.

Here is the invoice items:
underneath:
Sprayable sealer 224.28
Applicator 50
Labour £330

Materials:
Primer 15ltrs
1x320 strips
1x180 DAs
1x320DAs
1x500DAs
1x1000 wet and dry
1xlacquer
2x hardener
1x Thinner
1x Ultimer
2x Gravi Tex
1x Tiger Seal
1x Guide Coat
1 Spreader

12ltrs condor yellow paint (they mix this).

I've just had the front end and the engine cover painted at Selby's (Porsche approved repairer) and they used 0.75L of paint there's not a lot more of the car left after that so I think they are having your pants down!
Sorry mate!
Hope you get your car back and get it sorted

Get someone off this forum to get a quote off them to see how it compares with what they are trying to rob off you.

good luck Steve.

Paul

sorry to here your troubles, however this also happened to another member on here. He gave them what they quoted and took his car. Not saying this is the way to go.
Firstly did you have a quote on paper?? A quote is a fixed price. If they under quoted it's their loss. Or was it an estimate?? If it was the first l would only give them what they quoted. If it's was an estimate then take Adam's advice but legally an estimate is an estimate and you would just need to come to an agreed figure between yourself's . A trip to citizens advice cost nothing and you know were you stand legally.

Good luck mate hope you resolve this and get your car back soon.

I wouldn't go down the route of giving them a cheque and cancelling it, this won't be looked favourably upon if this ends up in court. You need to get the car back, which they cannot hold, and then do the arguing.

Trading standards are a good place to start, but pick the car up before it turns nasty. If it were me i would pay the original figure - even the top end of it if it is justifiable and state to them why you are doing so & you are taking the car, Try and keep it pleasant but firm and tell them you are more than happy for a third party to look into it and agree what the fair price is and settle any difference. No-one can argue therefore that you have been unreasonable.

By the way, mine is currently being painted - needs doors aligning etc I have a firm price of £2.5k with notification of any further work required along with costs prior to it being carried out.

thanks for your advice gents.

I have decided to :

Ask for an itemised bill listing individual prices

Challenge the labour for the undercoat (I know they spent about 4 hours on this max)

Query why the materials and sundries is so high

Query why they have used 15 litres of primer and 12 litres of paint - based on your experience below.

Query why they decided to go way over my budget (which they knew very well was a £3000 LIMIT) without consent.

Pay the £3000 to get the car back, then formally inform them that I will be speaking to trading standards and potentially be following this up with court action....

Hi Paul,

Im intriuged why they have but 12 litres of basecoat (yellow) but only 1 x laquer?? Also 15 litres of primer would do 5 cars not just one small speedster.

They have def rounded all consumable parts up but its the paint/primer/underseal labour that i think they are trying to pull a fast on at as there is no way in the world they have put 12 litres of paint on.

What you can say to them is that you are going to take to a vehicle detail specialist that has a paint depth gauge to check the paint thickness as yours must be at least an inch thick..!!

Feel free to give me a call if you need any advice or if you want me to get a quote for parts from my supplier so as to see if you are being overcharged!!!

if you pay the 4 grand, what is the likelyhood of you getting the difference back?

I wouldnt pay them any more than the quote, bring a witness with you when you try and take the car away so if they stop you you can claim assault. Also video the whole thing with a phone.

Joe
