Hi James
I'm keen to know like Roy -
I took my 356 and the temp gauge didn't get past mid point all weekend
(inc 2 hour crawl through le mans traffic and 80-90 mph trip down).
I've fitted an Ali oil cooler, supplied by Mr Prill, in place of the standard one under the fan housing - I ran with Millers Classic 20/50, as usual.
My temp gauge and sender are new, via PRS.
Big difference between the two readings - can the cooler be that much more efficient?
Cheers
Steve

Oil is Castrol straight 30
Temp gauge on motorway was at two thirds, car fully loaden at about 65-70mph - over that it started to climb rapidly
Interestingly I changed my sensor during the rebuild and they have two different stampings on them - the old one said 250 degrees, the replacement says 150degrees
On the lap the car got hot - so much so it nearly burnt my hand to lift the deck lid when I pulled over to check the fan belt hadnt snapped, but cooled rapidly at idle
Oil cooler is getting changed this weekend to a new ali one

Hi James
Let us know how it goes with the new cooler.
Sounds very warm if engine cover was hot to the touch.
Good Luck
Cheers
Steve
(I clumsily broke my temp gauge during rebuild and ordered a new one from PRS - it was calibrated to a new brass sender supplied and fitted on the engine, it might be worth checking the compatability of your sender and gauge, I'm sure PRS would advise)

James,
I also have never had the engine lid almost too hot to touch. Certainly, the engine lid gets warm after a run and after the car is stopped for a while but never excessively so. When the car was running at high speed did the green oil pressure warning light flash on and off? In the case of this happening and with the correct oil level then the engine must be looked at according to Porsche.
Maybe your fan belt was slipping at high speed, have you tried a slightly firmer tension?
I guess your timing is spot on, as you have driven so many miles but it could cause overheating. I hope your change to another oil cooler works James I guess the old one could have had a part blockage?
Let us know how you get on,
Roy

James,
there is some discussion on the registry site concernin oil how hot should it get.
It would appear the max temp before going into the red is 280F Oil in its modern form seems okay till 320F before breaking down.
The midway position is around 212F You can buy an thermometer to get into the sump but the reading will be 20F hotter than at the sender.
They also say belt slippage or timing if its running hot without real reason.
It would appear with high outside temps and high speed runs the needle might well go higher than half way as it seems anywhere in the green area is permissable. ( according to the info I have read )

No flashing of oil warning light and am inclined to think timing is ok given 3k miles of otherwise really good performance - will be changing the oil as well -I have upgraded to a later fan and dog house too from original A ones to improve cooling so am inclined to feel maybe a blockage in old cooler, will report back with new cooler and English weather

Fitted a new ali cooler (old one is from a 912)

Retimed it and took a bit of slack out of the fan belt - then went for a run - car is running just under half way on gauge which is encouraging (was a lovely sunny day in Yorkshire today) just have to wait another 2 years before another thrash round La Sarthe
