Alan Messick an American Photographer friend of mine has just put these pictures of The Pre 2004 Laguna Seca Historics onto his Gallery .

Not much about Porsche, but a number of cars that we know and love.

Blimey is that picture of the Ferrari for real?!??!

Does anybody know the story behind the picture?

Did it just fail causing the shunt or did it break as a result of the accident?

I know that Ferrari used to make their tubs in 2 pieces (a front and rear) and bond them together at the dash (right where this one has broken!) a pretty bad idea as you can see!

Very interested as I design racing car monocoques for a living.

The picture's for real - the car was a '99 F1 model (F399) owned/driven by Fritz Kroymans the Dutch Ferrari importer.

Here are some quotes from people who were at the Monterey Historics (courtesy of Pelican BBS):

"The crash looked like the classic rookie mistake - too much speed out of the corner (turn 6), let off/apply brakes, spin to the inside. He hit the inside tire barrier at about a 45 degree angle. The nose stuck, levering the car around and breaking the back end off, then both pieces slid down the track about a hundred feet. Mr. Kroymans is very lucky to be alive, much less uninjured."

"Kroymans is the Dutch importer for Ferrari (among other brands) , and has a 25-30 car collection of significant Ferraris that he regularly displays, so I would imagine he has the means to make a lot of strange things happen."

"Ferrari is very concerned about the chassis failure, it has been a problem in the past with this year car and it is very likely that car will never see the light of day again."

"I can't help but to think that this was a poor repair of a prior shunt. The amount of damage to the nose and front suspension was minimal--not undamaged, but certainly not enough to accompany a break like this. The factory really needs to identify this cause publicly, or at least to the satisfactioin of current owners."
