Been a vw man now My first 356 project..

Been into Vw's for 20+ years but now made the move to a 356.

This is my 1960 356b T5 coupe. Original UK car with matching numbers.Been off the road for a few years with previous owners.

Originally registered as YOB 3 . now 565 NOK.

Then I step in, late september this year. I know i have alot of work ahead but its what i like doing, bashing and shaping metal in the garage.

well going to let the pictures speak instead of me.

Matching number engine, been stood for 20+ years. heads look very clean, only real problem is no2 big end is seized to the crank. the rest are free.

The metalwork is very nearly completed on 'my' A so can imagine the surprises this is hiding

So apart from the obvious in the photos i.e. floors, battery box, rockers/longitudinals how's the rest of it looking?

the rest is no to bad. doors need a little work as does some of the rear body. but the great thing about this one is its not been messed with before..

I now see the problem you have with the inner wings. Obviously have been cut lower so it's going to take a bit of fabrication to add the right bits in.

this is the last Vw i have restored.

1970 Westfalia Campmobile. All work completed by me. so hope i can turn what i have learnt from Vw's to restore my 356 .

Also still working on this Vw. 1957 Herbie replica. running a 356 super 75, 356 A front brakes. based on the Herbie that done the racing scenes in the original 1969 Lovebug film.

Jon,

You know, I think like I also do with James you will end up with a nice 356. You obviously have experience and some shots you took of the body show the car to look very restorable. I bet, the pics James took of his work will help you with yours.

I suppose you are aware YOB 3 this 1963 super 90 was owned by a R.P.Parsons around 1992 and he belonged to PCGB. Maybe he still does and if you have no history? might offer some to you if you approach the PCGB office and ask?? Nice to have a UK super 90 I presume this is the original engine?

Best of luck with the work and look forward as I do from James in seeing future photo's.

the engine is the original as i have a copy of the original cardex stating original engine, body number and ign etc.

As the PCGB August 1992 newsletter details all the clubs known 356 cars registered with them at that time and on which your car seems to be listed I have a question.

Your thread seems to list this is as a 1960 car when the list shows 1963?

When was YOB 3 altered to your new number? Does the kardex detail the car as a super 90? Very nice to have a RHD original car you should also just post a short information on the car to the main talk page. Mike Smith will I think be interested to know you have this car and will know doubt have information on it also. ( he is involved in recording info on all UK RHD cars.) He might not see this info as listed unless its on the usual daily talk pages.)

Also just in case it helps the registered owner in 1992 R.P.Parsons had the PCGB membership number 04762

Mike Smith knows of my car and me..

The car i have is a 1960 T5b of which the original Reg was

YOB 3

it was then reregistered to
5 EYX
at some point on Kardex it has (1967)
and then registered again to
565 NOK we think about 1990.

Mike Smith has had YOB 3 in for service recently.

My car was sold to somebody called Troubridge in Nov 1960
Painted in silver with red interior and is a Std coupe not a super.Although it is still a matching numbers car.

it would be so nice to find out more history on the car but where do i start.

here is the new inner wing panel trial fitted.

Interesting information on your car. So, at least if not a super 90, its most certainly a RHD original 1960 T5 "B"

For your info the owner of your car 565 NOK in 1992 ( or as listed in 1992 ) was a Mr C Wren PCGB member no. 02735. He also owned at that time another 1960 356B T5 WYM 29H. So it would seem a person very interested in 356B cars.

Now he might still be a member of PCGB or at least his address might be available from PCGB. ( In the 60's and 70's when I belonged to the club they used to print full addresses of new members.) Maybe I have his address in the Porsche Posts I kept from that time. Too cold to look at the moment but will. I always think its nice to really have some history on the car you are driving. I have a photo of mine from 1960 given to me by the then owner.

Maybe Mike can sort the address of Mr Wren if he can, its worth a letter to him. Recently, a guy in New Zealand bought a UK imported 356A at Auction over there and I saw the reg number and it had been featured in a car mag from years ago. Through some detective work I traced the then owner and when the guy phoned him from NZ he promised to send him all info he needed.

The inner wing job is looking good, without repair panels 356 repairs would be that much harder.
