I hardly think a drop from 180 to 175bhp a "big drop", but that said, you wouldn't buy an early IB car for its performance.
No but there is a weight factor too and having driven both IMO they are leagues apart. Paper stats are often misleading.......

Due to the magnesium gearbox, the different gear ratios, the overall weight, the different sound insulation etc the earlier car feels more tippy toe versus the block of Germanic steel the SC is.

Choices choices: in the end its the condition of the individual car that matters a lot, I reckon!

Would it not be better to pose the question(s)?

What's the best 911 buy for :-

£10k?

£20k?

£30k

etc, etc.
Cheers

With your budget I'd go for another SC. I think the chrome look was still an option at that time. SCs in good condition are an absolute bargain. Bombproof reliability and quick (especially the later 204hp ones). I wouldn't go near a pre-impact bumper car with a budget under £25K

ok good advice! As long as its got chrome windows im going to look towards buying it! So 2.7, 3.0 carrera, SC, etc all good!

Sometime in the next few years i'll get a pre-impact bumper, and a good one too, before they shoot out of reach for all time!

just as an offside note - i have some time to play with so i was looking at importing some cars from South Africa (like a pre impact bumper, 356, etc), thinking i would get a bargain - nope can you believe it, the south african porsches are much more expensive than the british ones! Oh well saves a massive head ache i suppose =)

South Africa? My uncle did his Anaesthetics specialisation in SA between 1985 and 1988.

He ended up importing 16 Belgian/ German LHD Porsches into SA to pay for his studies and to have a bit of "spending money" to fund his sailing habit.

My other uncle, a GP, sourced the land and used patients' word-of-mouth to source them. They were then technically set up well, rust repaired + repaint, and on the boat.

I have at home pics of a
356a in silver
a 912 karmann body with a 2.2T engine
914-6 in yellow
911 2.4 T in yellow
911 2.7 targa in moss green
of those that I can recall.

Also, a container worth of spares such as gearboxes or clocks or an updated interior from a written off 911 would make very good money, as spares are non-existent as all cars were updated/recycled and kept on the road at all costs.

The market was very lucrative back then and the last time I looked into it was in 2005 as I was contacted by a chap who has the sister car to my 76 C3 targa. Mucho £££- a 924 Turbo mk1, what in 2005 would make something like £1200 in the UK, would costs there the equivalent of £11000, considering the fluctuation of the Rand.

A backdated Carrera that's been on the market for a while (ripe for an offer), could be worth a look if it's been done nicely:

Richard,

That car has been discussed on the marketplace discussion board at www.impactbumpers.com

Now, tell me. You have bought your car now- but you are still searching the market?

;)

Me, I love cars, and I love to scour the market to help people find them too - it's kind of an addiction I guess. I'm definitely in the wrong job, I should have been a researcher, I feel much more happy when I'm sourcing information from all over the world - a bit like Johnny 5, but not as fast

Thanks for the links!

Its great having an extra pair of eyes! Glenns silver 2.7s is simply awesome, you have got to love the silver with the red interior. I do and awesome history, the kind i aspire to.

Im going to hang on a bit and see what comes up in RHD, ive just seen a yellow 2.7 for about 9000 on car and classic, and theres a yellow pre-impact bumper on pistonheads for about 13,000 also RHD (i think its a 2.4T is anyones intrested), but i dont like yellow, and whatever I get i'm going to keep original except for a few mechanical upgrades.

Rubbish i know, im just going to keep my eyes open, ive been looking since May anyway - so a few more months wont hurt - also i didnt realise that some of the sc's had chrome windows, as the black windows was acatually an option (except on the carrera, then i think it was the other way around)

Anyway a big thank you for everyones help, i didnt mean to dominate this forum with my desires especially as its really for pre-impact 911's which i cant yet afford (but i will in time). I certainly have a better understanding of pricing/values for models, so that goes a long way towards putting me in the right direction.

:)
