We have a VW T4 Transporter that we bought new with an official VW LPG conversion. There is virtually no power difference between petrol and LPG, and other than having the system changed under warranty in the first few weeks of ownership has been no problem at all in its 100,000 miles. It does better than 4 miles to the litre of gas (12.5p/mile @ 50p/litre), and we've been very pleased with it.
I don't have any worries on safety as long as the LPG tank is a recognised tested unit. Many of us carry at least as much LPG in our campers and motorhomes.

Cheers!
