Bollox - lost my keys! What are the options??

Its been 6 weeks since I last saw my keys - I am hoping they will re-appear when I put the kitchen units in the kitchen that are currently sitting in the lounge.

I have to have a contingency plan in case they dont - so what are the options and the likely cost here? I dont know if the one key I got with the car is the original. I did have a spare cut from it but it didnt always work, so I kept it on the same keyring doh! The key did work both the doors and ignition but not the glove-box so was probably the valet key.

I am guessing the options are,

1. New key from Porsche from chassis number which may or may not work on the existing locks?

2. New barrels and key - sounds really expensive already?

3. Have a key made to fit the existing locks by a locksmith?

Any ideas gratefully received, as I am due to be taking the car to France for the last two weeks in June for a tour.

Just to elaborate, you can find the key number on the door lock barrel. Ring Tony with this number and he will despatch one the same or next day from America. It is very cheap - cheaper than any UK supplier. Also, what he does not know about Porsche keys is not worth knowing, trust me on this.

Cheers Del, does this require a complete strip out of the interior door trim? I did try once before and couldnt get it off and couldnt work out why!

yes you could say so. Its really only the door card though. To get that off, all handles / winders / lock pushers / armrest etc have to come off first, then the card should be a doddle to get off. Mine is held on with screws going all the way around the outside of the door card.

If you take your time and dont force anything, you will see it is one of the easist things to do and a prime example of that famous Haynes manual line "refitting is a reversal of removal"

Try again and if you get stuck, post up on here how far you have got and me or someone will talk you through what to do next.

Can you remember what you got stuck on last time? Post a picture or two up of your door card too.

I think I got all the screws out, winders, top trim, lock button etc. I think I got stuck on the inside door release handle - seemed to be the only thing left unless I have missed something obvious!!

What did your key cost all in by the way?

Hi, The interior door handle has a little ball jointed adjustable link to connect it to the lever screwed to the inner door skin.

Just pop it off the link on the door and the handle/armrest should come off. Make sure you have also undone the allen bolt that goes under the handle through the armrest at about 45 degrees.

Not sure cos im not sure what style of interior door trim you have but i think someone below has covered this for you.

I bought key blanks and had spare keys cut, but was told by the key place that there was a good chance that they wouldnt work properly..and they dont. They are very subtly the wrong profile looking at them end on, and so wont even insert into the lock...even though they are from a reliable source and have the correct raised 'Porsche' marking.

I wonder if this happens with keys supplied by Tony?

I wondered the same thing. In my case i had no keys either as i had misplaced my one and only key so thought this was the best and cheapest first solution to try. Thankfully it fitted like a hand in glove and worked perfectly in all both locks & ignition. Was very pleased with the result.

I would say to ask Tony before you order. He was quite confident that the right number from the door lock would be fine.

Sorry to hijack but i have the same problem , lost the keys for my 66 912 , i have removed the lock barrel from the handle but there are no numbers on it anywhere that i can see where should it be ? also where can i buy blanks ? i know someone who should be able to cut a key to match the lock.

you can buy the blanks from Porsche directly as they have a department known as Porsche Classic. About £17ish + VAT i think.

Can you get some close up pictures of your lock / barrel, i'll see if i can help you point it out.
