Headlining help please...

Hello people...

Please can someone point me in the right direction to have my headlining replaced - i.e. where to go / who does it and is any good at it (using new material as the old one is stained and hanging out around the rear pop outs)

Also, what should i expect to pay for such a job and does it involve removing any of the glass?

It's a fairly simple DIY job Del. Just takes a little patience. And yes, all the glass has to come out so you might want to think about new rubber at the same time.

Leicester based, I have been told they are very good, I've only ever bought material from them though, so can't comment too much. Our old MX5 roof was fine and they did fit that.

I dont think i trust myself to do a job that to me seems quite hard and for the first time ever - especially on my precious Porsche. Might be different if it was one of my old beetles back in the day.

Have you dont the same job yourself already? I wonder if it's worth giving it a go and if all else fails, hand it over to a professional.

And yes, all the glass has to come out so you might want to think about new rubber at the same time.

I have a friend that could possibly take the glass out for me as he works for a windscreen place.

Thinking about it, its just the front windscreen and rear screen right? cos the doors are self explanitory and the rears are pop outs. I cant remember that well without seeing the car but i don't think the seals are all that old or perished from memory.

I did just speak to a guy here in Leicester (Steve @ Classic Car Serivces) and he said it might be an idea to buy a new headliner from one of the usual suppliers and he could fit it for me as it would be much cheaper to buy an already made one for the car rather than make one from scratch, i think he recommended Southbound trimmers. I dont know who else supplies headlinings already cut to fit a 912.

Hey Tim,
I know these guys and the only experience i have had with them was a bad one. I took a pair of Porsche seats to them which had one bad panel (drivers side bolster) they insisted the only way was to redo both entire seats. They were also very short with me and gave me the impression that i could not afford it and it would be too expensive for me. So instead I took the seats to Steve @ Classic Car Services. He said that it was easy to take the covers off, remove the faulty panel and replace it with the original vinyl that Porsche use, and that is exactly what he did for me aswel as replace the centres in a nice grey to match the carpets in my Ghia and add a logo on the headrests again replacing that "panel" with OG porsche vinyl. It was an altogether happier experience and was not at all expensive in the scheme of things.
Rubbish pic due to poor light, but i can tell you, he did a really great job for me here (i defo recommend him to anyone for future reference) :

Yes Del, I did mine and was quite pleased at how well it went. Just bought a genuine headliner (not expensive) and a whole stack of spring document clips, plus the glue..

The trick is to work slowly, piece by piece, just gently tensioning the fabric as you go.

I am sure there are already threads here and some good pictures of how other DDK'ers have done the same thing.
